Italy: Now what?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061018...p_061018012342
Ignoring the absurdity of queer thinking in these kidnapper's motivations, these are the options: 1. The Afghan in question returns voluntarily and knowing what awaits him. 2. Italy refuses to extradite him, and the hostage will get murdered. 3. Italy negotiates successfully and pays money for the release of the hostage without extraditing the Afghan. 4. Italy complies, extradites the Afghan, and get the hostage. 5. Commandos raid the location where the hostage is being held prisoner. Consequences: 1. Would be a noble act, but the wrong signal, assisting Conservatives claims that the rule of Islamic laws cannot be escaped, no matter where. 2. Possible outcome, and obviously a tragedy for the hostage and his family. But it tells the world a message that Italian policies refuse to obey Islamic laws - which might be more important, as harsh as it is. :shifty: 3. The most likely outcome, maybe. If successfully conducted it would illustrate how corrupt such conservatives are and how hollow their holy rules are  - it would also give evidence that the state of Italy can be blackmailed. 4. Wrong message from A to Z. Completely unacceptable. :nope: 5. Best option, but obviously it has a lot of necessary prerequisites that are extremely unlikely to be fulfilled. :-? IF they are fulfilled, this would be the way to go. :arrgh!: If the hostage gets killed and the place where he was held prison can be identified, the according village or the closest village to that location should be flattened completely - to give a message why it is a bad idea to take Westerners as hostages. the simple message is: hit us, and we hit you harder. It is unlikely that the residents in the close area of that location would not have helped and accepted what was going on anyway. To ignore the death of the hostage and simply continue with business as usual is not an option. |
a lousy situation ...made even more appalling by the fact that Afghanistan was invaded in order to prevent such acts...on a wider scope the statement

A 3 and 5 combo, with the hope that 5 has a chance of saving the hostage's life.
This should be elementary but it's not. BTW, speaking of Italy........................ |

(all of this is a metaphor for Lebanon, and certainly this kidnapping issue, as well) |
What is the equalizer? A cow prod? If so, I've been on the tail end of it a few times.
