Question about Type VIIC 41/42

I'm finally getting to the point where these are available. Any advantages to them? My VIIC is already heavily upgraded, and I only have about 1500 renown. Its October 1943.

What are the benefits to these boats? Is it worth upgrading?

For you too little time and too little renown.

But if you had enought, the answer is YES!

Those boats were never built, but were meant to be the pinnacle of diesel u-boats. They had better crush dept and some other advantages I can't remember right now!

7c/41 was built.

7c/42 was ordered, but none were ever built. Project was scrapped in favor of the type 21.

In sh3 terms, no they arent worth the upgrade. Theres absolutly no difference except in torpedo loadout because all 7C models, use the exact same sub files - meaning same range, same diving time, same crush depth.

If they use the same sub files, then how do they have different torpedo loadouts? It says in the book longer range and better crush depth for VII C/42, why bother saying it if that is not the case ingame? Also that would mean the IXD2 has the same range as IXB, and I'm sure there are type IX vets here who will tell you thats not true, although I don't know myself, I've never used the type IX. But why even bother to have different types if they are all the same? They don't all look the same, so they must use different config files.

What I do is check on the sub upgrade screen. It gives you the stats on the each boat offered to you. I make my decision based on what the game shows because the config files should match. If this boat does not look like much of a gain for the renown used on it, stick with what you have until you can upgrade to better boat than this one offered.

Ok, filewise (excluding type II's) you have this:

7b
7c
9b
9c
9D2

Then you have what the game assigns to these files.

7b = 7b
7c = 7c, 7c/41, 7c/42
9b = 9b
9c = 9c , 9c/40
92d = 9d2 (its intresting to note that they were going to include the 9d1 but remarked its definitions out)

Generally speaking the sub varients, or rather what they're equiped with and when they become avialable is in the basic.cfg.

The prmary difference between the 7c and 7c42 in SH3 terms is that the 7c42 is set to have three forward external stores, and 1 or 2 radars avialable (one of which is broke). Thats pretty much it. it Uses the 7c files.

If you dont beleive me, look at the basic.cfg file, then the sh3/data/subs directory.

edit: better yet, don't use SH3 commander, just start a game, go to a mission, and see how deep both subs start crushing at. You might find that all 7c subs, start crushing around the same depth ;)

Use Timetravelers Crush Depth Mod. And you can then set the better depths for the boats. Also adjust the range of the boats according to the specs supplied.

I think perhaps when I get my VII C/42, I will just go and manually change the config file to what it is supposed to be for that sub. If I ever make it that far in the war that is...
