There are two versions of the patches, one that is US and one that is European (because there are two versions of SHIII . . . yep, you guessed it: one US and one European). You have to use the correct version patch for the game you installed.

It seems to me that you might try to install the wrong patch to the version of the game you have. There are a couple of patches IIRC.

I had the exact same problem but I solved it by using windows to search for all SH3 files. the standard removal process misses some files. Once I had manually deleted all these the update worked like a charm.

Use the Windows Program:
START menu
Select SEARCH
Select FOR FILES OR FOLDERS
From the Windows Search Menu, you'd type in which files/folders, in this case being SH3, Silent Hunter 3, etc.

When you do an UNinstall prior to a completely new REinstallation, the UNinstall program usually leaves SOME file untouched. For example, it'll delete all the files and folders from the Ubisoft/SilentHunter directories, but won't touch the files in the My Documents and Folders area.

And, there are, technically, FOUR different patches, not just two. Two are for the US versions - 1 for the Internet Download, and 1 for the DVD in a box. And the other two are for the European/Middle East/Asian versions - 1 for the Internet Download game and the other for the DVD in a box version.

King Cobra is correct there are 4 total patchs. Choose the correct patch. If you got the disc then you can forget the patches for downloaded off the internet type deal. You got a 50/50 chance on the last two patches. I live in the USA so it was easy for me to make an educated decision.

Yes, when you do an UNinstall, you have to delete ALL the files associated with the simulation, which includes all files and folders in the Ubisoft program directory as well as the files and folders in your My Documents directory. Unfortunately, this includes all your saves. It's a necessary evil because if you leave just one file intact from the original install, you'll always have a problem NOT being able to upgrade the original with the patches. That's why everyone always tells you that the patch has to be added to a CLEAN SH3 program install.
