Bismarck Encounter in GW

Knowing where this event takes place, I made sure I was available on the fateful day. I managed to sink both battleships leaving only the light cruisers to attack the Bismarck. The Bismarck took a pounding but sent the two cruisers to the bottom after their first pass. Afterwards, I sailed along side the Bismarck to view the damage and get a sense of how big it is compared to my Type IXC. It was an odd feeling, almost like seeing the Titanic come back to life.

Now the interesting part. After setting off to pursue more convoys, I recieved a message that the Bismarck had been sunk a few hours later and immediately after that, I saw a Task Force icon on the map showing it heading due east just outside the area where the Bismarck was located. A few hours more and it was heading South off the coast of Spain.

I'm wondering if you manage as I did to protect the Bismarck and change the outcome, does the sim sends another task force to finish the job. If so, it's conceivable that a player could repeatedly succeed in sinking the big capital ships until all torpedoes have been spent. I'm going to test this theory tonight.

I've got the same query...let's hope we get a good response scrapser

I cant say for sure, but I think there is no such 'trigger' in the game that would allow a task force to be spawn if the Bismarck survived. But I think the message could be triggered to show only when the Bismarck is sunk. I´m not sure about this either, I´ve only seen this kind on trigger while making a single mission, cant say if it´ll work in campaign.

Hopefully this answered even partly to your question.

IIRC correctly there should be another group out there anyway with the carrier
But when you are more than 30km ( ? ) away the game will respawn the ships you sunk
Even if you sailed on and stayed with the Bismark you would get the message as it an automatic message sent at a set time - whether its sunk or not

Cheers guys...that pretty much answers my query and explains why I get the 'Bismarck Sunk' message even tho I've destroyed the enemy and still have the Bismarck in visual range

Bismarck's Revenge

Well as I mentioned previously, I sank the two battleships prior to their reaching the point of encounter with the Bismarck. I saved the patrol at that point, so I was able to reload the patrol. I proceeded to go watch the fireworks and hang around to see what happens. The Bismarck does indeed sail in a circle and remain even after the message appears that it's been sunk. The second task force also appears northwest of the area heading east.

I reloaded the patrol and this time headed southeast at flank speed instead of watching the encounter. Doing this allowed me to be in a position to intercept the task force which appears, heads east for a while before turning south. It turned out to consist of a Revenge and an Illustrious carrier. I sank them both.

This was a great patrol and the largest tonnage I've ever tallied. Prior to the Bismarck encounter, I had already hit two other task forces and a large convoy. This is the result of my patrol....

1st Task Force
1 King George (2 torps)
1 Revenge (2 torps)

1st Enemy Convoy (had to use up my deck gun ammo to manage this)
5 Large Tankers (1 torp each to the stern followed by deck gun if necessary)
2 Corvettes (deck gun)
1 Black Swan (1 torp)

2nd Task Force
1 Illustrious (2 torps)

3rd Task Force (Bismarck)
1 King George (2 torps)
1 Nelson (2 torps)

4th Task Force (Post Bismarck)
1 Revenge (2 torps)
1 Illustrious (2 torps)

5th Task Force (heading back to port)
1 Nelson (1 torp - critical hit)

Obviously a bit over the top in terms of realism but it was fun. I think I had at least two other critical hits on the capital ships. I've learned where to hit them over the past year or so.

For those of us to lazy to look it up, whats the approximate Grid where the final battle takes place? And is the battle in Denmark straits also included?

I've just started a new patrol from Lorient now, and seeing as it's the 2. May '41 now it might be fun to head over to one (or both if I can manage it timewise) places and see what happends.

The battle takes place in the northeast corner of BE53. Something I picked up on but was too far away to make the intercept is the battle between the Bismarck and the Hood west of Iceland. If you can get out there before the 20th, you should be able to witness the exchange. A message hints at this on May 22nd or 23rd I believe. If you go there, you will likely not make it back to the Bismarck encounter point in time but what the heck. The next campaign I play, I will definitely make sure I go out there.

The message is just a text radio script, with timed based triggers. They have zero effect on the game, just for ambiance.

Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\campaigns\campaign

filename messages_en.txt
or
messages_de.txt, depends if you are in english or German.

Either open the file and edit out what you don't want, or delete the file. You'll still get the convoy messages, those come from somewhere different.

Danke. I'll prob go watch the Hood sink first then restart the patrol to get front row tickets to the end battle then :)

Well I finally got around to seeing the great battle in the Denmark Straits.... What an anticlimax :) Bismark and Eugen steamed straight towards Hood and Wales and they all trained their guns on eachother and sailed on opposing courses at a distance of 4-5km.... Eager as a Beaver I sat there watching, ready to get some great screenshots.... and nothing. Nobody fired!

Frustrating it was, so I charged Wales and Hood at Full Speed, my puny 88 firing wildly. At 2000 meters I launched my eels and sunk Hood and then Wales sunk me with gunfire (Mind you it took two battle ships about 30 salvoes with the small guns and probably 6-7 salvos with main guns before they did ....)

So... how do I fix this? How do I get the battleships to actually engage eachother?

Rubini 10-24-06 03:40 PM

The distance when the engage begins on Sh3 depends so much on weather factor. In stock Sh3/GW/NYGM/RUB the maximum distance was 5-6Km and the medium one is 3KM (weather factor limitations).

But wait for the upcoming GWX...battles will start at maximum at 30KM!! and medium ones at 10KM!! It's very nice. We also have now all the main historical WWII Ops on GWX. Really a lot of them, far more than any mod ever.

Ops...I already said so much. More on this only when GWX come alive.

Rubini, you sly devil. You give us just enough info at times to make us drool all over our keyboards. Remember loose lips sink ships. LOL

You're just making it harder for us to wait damitall. :yep: Now cut that out and get back to work matey...... time flies and those 6 weeks are going fast. ;)

Just kidding with the above. We know you guys are working hard and as fast as you can. I just had to razz ya a little bit. ;)
