Map of Victories - (DIAL-UP WARNING!)

Well, I finally figured out how to plot my victories onto a map, and it looks pretty cool if I do say so myself - my current (and most successful) Kaleun's victories are shown on the map below - 115 ships sunk in 22 patrols through September 1943, for a total of 566,397 tons so far:

Unfortunately, no matter what I've done to it the image is still a pretty large file (or else the quality goes to crap), so I hope you can see it. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a place to host this that let's you see it and zoom in at decent quality yet, so you can't get the full effect of how it looks on my PC, but you get the idea - each ship icon is marked with the patrol number, and it's a fun little record of one's adventures on the high seas :) If you want to see it in it's full "glory" so you can zoom around and stuff, you can download the image here:

Now I just need to get a good print out of this, "suitable for framing"

Care to share how you plotted all of that? :)

Bah, stupid vapidstare.de, can't save the file from it because of the way it's cached. :(

Cool stuff mate, i was looking for something like that!

Biggles 09-23-06 04:13 AM

It was actually a lot easier that I expected, once I got started. All it took was a little time and patience. First, since I couldn't see the sunken ship map marker in the game's file, I just drew one using Paintshop Pro - the file I used can be found here (it's not great, but it gets the idea across):

http://rapidshare.de/files/34172759/Sunken_Ship_Map_Icon.psp.html

That file is still in .psp format - I found when I converted it to .jpg it looked pretty crappy, so I kept it in .psp format while I worked with it.

Then, I took the map I use to determine whether the game's patrol grid assignment for my next patrol is reasonable or whether I want to change it with SH3 Commander (unfortunately, I can't find/remember where I downloaded that map, so I can't give credit to the original source of the map file, but I've uploaded it here in case anyone doesn't already have one they can start with: http://rapidshare.de/files/34174012/U-Boat_Patrol_Grids_Map.jpg.html ), and just started pasting copies of the sunken ship marker into the grid squares where my Kaleun's Personnel File from SH3 Commander had logged where I had sunk all my victims. I just kept changing the number at the bottom of the sunken ship icon so I could designate which sinkings were from which patrol, and kept pasting copies until I was done. Things got a little tight in some of the squares where I had lots of successes, but in the end it seemed to work out OK.

Been wanting to do this for some time - amazing how simple it turned out to be

Really, really nice. You really got to see the world in that career:o!

It's the TGA file named:
"ShipDestroyed"
located in folder:
"C:\Program files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Menu\Gui\Units"

It seems to be some sort of invisible thing that I can't see with Paintshop Pro (someone in another thread said you could see it with something called Gimp2.2, which you can download from the internet for free, but I haven't tried that), so I'm not sure what you would have to do to get rid of it - maybe just replace it with a new .tga file that's nothing but a transparent square or something like that. I think that there must be something else to it though - some other mechanism that "colors" the sunken ship depending on whether it is enemy, neutral or friendly, but I'm not sure how the game manages that little trick. So you might have to find and alter that as well if you don't want the markers to show up in game (although, now that I think about it, I'm not seeing these markers in game anymore, so maybe GW got rid of them somehow?)

Wow, the game's got a cute little crashed plane icon, too. A-a-a-w, 'cute it is:oops:.

Why didn't they use it in-game anyways?

I don't know if they have such an icon in game or not - I don't remember seeing one when I shot down my only plane so far a few patrols back. If you're talking about the one on my map, I just made that one from scratch too so I could record that momentous occasion of my only aircraft kill

Some one mentioned this in an earlier post. They seemed to run out of time when they were making the game and left it out. There are a lot of little things like that in files of the game.

If thay just releade an SDK for SHIII, just imagine what the modders could do for the game!!!:hmm:

"It seems to be some sort of invisible thing that I can't see with Paintshop Pro "

the invisible thing to which you refer is the alpha channel (try photoshop or indeed the free gimp program) its just a white/black image which determines transparency (used in nearly every game ever), most file formats like .tga support alpha channels .bmp and .jpg do not.

the reason you will just see black is that the program you using is not looking at the alpha channel of the image, just the colour- ive never used paintshop-pro but there are probably settings in there somewhere to enable the alpha to be seen.

Sure - it isn't really a "mod", just a map I fixed up to show my current Kaleun's victories. Apparently the Rapidshare thing timed out - try here for the picture of my map:

http://show.imagehosting.us/show/175...-1_1751512.jpg

[edit] Apparently, the site I used above has small limits and is already out of bandwidth :( - try the link below for a copy of my map with victories already marked:

http://files.filefront.com//;6200312;;/

If you want the "blank" map I started with, try here:

http://files.filefront.com//;6199584;;/

I wish I could remember where I got this map, so I could give credit for it, but it was a long time ago and I lost track of the source.

And try here if you want to use my sunken ship icon files (though you can pretty easily make your own if you want):

http://files.filefront.com//;6199579;;/

These images are in Paintshop Pro format - hopefully whatever you're using can convert them as needed or, as I said, it's pretty easy to make your own.

Hope you enjoy this - I still get a kick out of it even though, as you can see from my map image, my latest patrol (23rd) hasn't been very successful so far.
