what sort of visual range would a merchant see a U-boat on the surface on a clear day?

Normally, your watch crew SHOULD spot them before they spot you. To ansewr your question I believe it would be like 4000m, but maybe one of experts would be able to correct that

I reckon closer to 3000m depending on sea state and uboat being 'end on' :hmm:
