FFG active sonar problem

Just bought the game, first post and I start right off with a problem:

Is it just me or is the active sonar on the OHP not working right? Whenever I use the active sonar, there is absolutely no difference between the omni and omni rotational mode. The single beam works fine, and I somehow expected the omni rotational mode to look like multiple single beams one after another that cover the whole area over time, but instead it looks and seems to work exactly like the omni mode where the whole area is covered with a single ping (???).
My game's patched to 1.03, no mods.
There ought to be some notable (and visible) difference between the two omni modes, right?

The difference isn't visible, but in general, you will get a little better detection ranges in Omni Rotational than Omni.

>Yep, omni is totally pointless (in the game)
stick with omni rot.

You say "in the game"

What is the reason you would use it instead of rotational in real life? Enlighten a land lubber. ;)

A real life active sonar is a lot more complicated that what you see in DW. One really shouldn't take the active sonar in DW to be a super high fidelity model of a real active sonar.

Ahh, I see...
Thanks for the answers.

No kiddin'

The other really humerous one is "active intercept." If my sonar worked that well I'd be dead by now.

For gameplay purposes things are modeled as well (or actually a lot better) than anyone would expect, especially environmental modeling. I prefer to be able to play the game without a staff of several people to watch my sonar screens for me.

I'm surprised you feel that way. One of my pet peeves is the environmental modeling. I HATE how "bottom limited" in DW is in fact more like isothermal. it drives me NUTS. I wish that there was a way to interface a publically available climatological database, like Levitus (on which GDEM was based) and then have DW choose the SSP based on that. I mean, they get the charts from something like the ETOPO satellite elevation database. Surely they could draw on equivilents from the oceanographic community?

I dunno... maybe this is just because I'm a sonar geek, though.

Heh, given my fascination with the theory of optimum search, my missions tend to run long, so I often wish I had someone who could cover for me while I got get a soda. :-)

I've gotten shot with more cruise missiles while I was snacking...
