Sub Active sonar

ok i am having a serious problem with the active sonar in-game, i'm usually playing the 688i but have tried it on kilo and akula and pretty much the same results...i do a ping and i hear the ping bounce off the contact but i cant see it well enuogh to differ it from the rest of the ambient noise...does this have something to do with my gamma setting or can i just not see good...because from what i have read i should be able to pick out the contact just fine.

and this isnt at the furthest range it can go either...most of the time its around 1/3 the distance of max ping range...help me out on what to look for on this.

You have to stare realy hard at the screen and i mean hard there will be a little dot that is brighter orange and thats your contact.

I also dont see em, even with when "staring real had at the screen"

Im my opinion its a design fault, cause you can actually mark something, you just dont know where it is. Nothing you can do about it, I know its annoying.

What I do when I use active: When sbumitting the ping, I am scrolling with my mouse cursor along the progressing wave. When I hear a ping return, I stop moving the mouse. Now I know the distance to the conact. Now I click through ALL the bearings (or if I know a general direction I can narrow it down a bit) and press mark.
With a bit of luck, I hit the contact (which I had NEVER EVER seen with my eyes).

Personaly i dont use it its a pointless tool to a unit thats ment to remain undetected.

What about for the FFG? I am having a hard time finding subs with my sonar.

Wim Libaers 08-24-06 05:38 PM

On the FFG, use omni rotational. If you hear something but don't see it, you can try going through all bearings with the single beam mode, that narrows it down a bit.

I have no idea for the FFG mahuja the mast of the FFG can tell you also his guide is excellent.

That's exactly what I do too, though my success rate with this method is much lower. The number of times I've been able to see a blip of any kind w/ Akula can be counted on one hand. I once killed a Seawolf by designating on his countermeasure and flooding the area with missiles, and the other was against a Typhoon or something, broadside...

well, i'm glad i'm not the only one having this problem.

I prefer to defend rather than attack but when it comes to attack well i have my own methords.

On russian subs the active sonar is next to useless. American subs have interlaced display, which helps to see the contact against noise. FFG uses averaging, with even better results.
Subs needs stealth anyway, pinging says 'shoot here'. Active is good for FFG, but you better be fast with attacking, especially if you use LWAMI.
I think the fact you can hear active return, but you can't see it, is simply bug. You can never hear weak return. In no situation. Return volume is always the same. And it should not be.
In situations where you can hear but not see, it is not the display what is wrong, but the sound.

the only time i care to really use the active (as sub) is in a situation where ive gone under a therm in order to get very very very close, and dont want to risk reaquiring and checking tma again. while in a seawolf i came up behind a kilo like this. based on my old tma i expected him to be around 1500m. always a chance it has randomly changed course right ? . come up above therm. decided id single ping to confirm calculated range and bearing and like many others mention i got the sonic return but cant see a thing.

so i fired the torp. he was right where i thought he was
but this is exactly the type of situation the active is intended for, no ?

the expected time between ping and fire torp is presumably going to be very very short. the torp is ready to go , presets are done , i just want to confirm. the split second of advance warning will not help the enemy.
