Next Gen NVidia and ATI GPU's to need 200 Watts
 

Why do we need 600 + PSU's? Is my power bill going to go out the window? Am I making a space heater in my room or something? I am starting to even see more 1K Watt PSU's showing up! This is just getting rediculous!

Are you sure that the 200Watts are only for the graphics card and not for processor+graphics card under stress ?

I still prefer to see a video card consume 200watts than to see a person consume 16000watts for half an hour to blow dry hair. :D

Its depressing, after finally Intel saw the light with the conroe processor (low power consumption with respect to northwood/prescott cores) on the other hand we have nvidia/ati just increasing without bounds the power consumption.
It doesn't make sense.
I know that the next graphics card I'll buy will not be a top end card mostly because of this ridiculous power consumption.

Considering I already own an x1900 XTX, and my sys does heat up my room when I play a game, I'd hate to see what this new one will do. I'll have to install air conditioning!

I agree. I'm getting very tired of the outrageous video card prices and their ridiculous power consumption - it is to the point now a single higher end video card can consume more raw power than everything else in the system combined, and I don't even want to get into SLI and just how sick the power required for two high end cards in SLI and corresponding heat produced is.

To provide more value-added to their vid cards both ATI and NVidia should offer one of those old fashioned toaster oven attachments, it is long past that point of absurdity.

I'm looking at doing a new scratch build within the next couple months and the video card is the component I least look forward to selecting.

They drip feed us, first it was those big square card looking floppies, then it was the 1.44 floppy which you could install a game off! - then cds,then dvds, cpus, ram, hdd and now its the PSU turn.

Why dont they just put out the 20gig cpu, 5000gig hdd nVidia FX15000, and 20gig ram sticks and be done with it!

The Watt numbers are believable, if you consider that even RAM today is one of the biggest power consumers in your system. Depending on type, RAM can consume up to 10-20% of the RAM size in Watts. that means that eventually fastest RAM type of for example 2 GB in size can consume up to 400 Watt max.

Funny how often RAM is overseen as a major power consumer.

Since the industry obviously shows no motivation to keep the lid on the pan regardiung power consummation, I tend to agree that action by the lawmakers may be necessary to boost the motivation to find more creative replacement solutions for this kind of power-hungry technology.

Must be some garbage RAM. Not sure a normal PSU can power that. I have 2 GB and I don't draw a fraction of that amount. If you overclock it and increase the timing and voltage, then I could see it start to rise in power consumption.

tjhat is info from a technician in a computer store where i regularly go and have some talking with them, not just business-oriented: they offered extremely well service when buying my last system, and really took their time, and the conversation soon left the limits of pure computer-stuff. That guy said they have had system being brought to them with 500W PSU and 2 GB RAMs of the latest kind - that did not function, but worked well, when reducing RAM size or plugging in older RAM bars. The manufacturing company has nothing to do with it (for the most they sell Infinion). Since then i meet them whenever i am in that part of the city. I also found the 10-20% formula quoted repeatedly ( at least two times) on technical sites. The faster the RAM, the more power-hungry it is. It is also getting ridiculously hot.

Your shop guys are either smoking crack, or are trying to get a big PSU sale!!!

I have a nice modded full tower case (no PSU, will need to buy that separately) that I'm getting from a friend of mine and will most likely sell my current rig minus 1 hard drive when I'm ready to upgrade.

With 2 x1900 XTXs in Crossfire then one of those tool-free hinged case sides would be a nice asset - that way you'd have easy access to the inside area where you could broil stakes under the video card and other such creative uses of the massive heat output... i'm thinking just add a mini-fridge to your pc area and you have a complete kitchenette :D
