What causes the slowdowns in time compression mode?

Whenever you come near a convoy or something, your computer's time compression chews down and updates very choppily; likewise you really can't get time compression up very fast.

This really makes carrying out war patrols become a tedious chore.

I'm just wondering if anyone's done any experiements to speed up the way the game plays? I've done this by creating modified atlantic and mediterranean-only random campaign files; in which only convoys, etc which are in either the atlantic or pacific are in; but that doesn't seem to help much.

EDIT: One of my ideas is that the huge amounts of ships in convoys hurts; perhaps reducing the number of ships in a convoy by say 25% could dramatically speed up the game?

The game automatically lowers the TC when a ship is detected and won't let you increase it beyond a certain amount (I think 32) when you're in an attack situation. I don't know what you mean by "updates very choppily." IIRC, the auto TC lowering can be changed in the main.cfg in my documents\sh3\data\cfg

By that I mean, if you have it set to like 1024x; the time compression will perform like it's at 512 or 256.

I know exactly what you mean. Its kind of a cheat really. If you're patrolling in the middle of nowhere and can't see an enemy and then suddenly the game slows down BINGO you can submerge and prolly detect a convoy or a ship somewhere.

I think it all comes down to CPU usage; having to process and simulate the course of all those ships.
