Nice find, Clive.

I can't get to my stuff right now, but if you get a copy of the book Das Boot, he describes what they're eating on several occassions.

That's one of the little things I love about the movie: the book describes the different ways the officers eat their daily lemon ration; all of them different, including the 2WO's 'special cocktail'. The movie doesn't go into detail, but if you look closely you'll see that each one of them does something different, including the Chief sucking the lemon after putting sugar directly into his mouth.

Fresh food first followed by tin food then something very :shifty:

P_Funk 08-19-06 06:11 PM

With all that food hanging near their bunks I wonder if all the men after a week smelled like salted ham.:rotfl:

That certainly might promote canibalism should starvation ever become an issue...:hmm:

I would imagine after a week all the fresh food smelled and tasted like diesel fuel.

Ok I see" Nobody knows what they eat, thats cool I can spculate however.,
cabbage and sausage or somthing like that,..Or baked potato and boiled meat and vegees of some kind, and maby fish like in sardines ?.

flyingdane 08-19-06 07:42 PM

When the americans came over there did that change things, like what food you had or what you could have to take home to your family.:hmm: or not.

I will try to put things together from my memory! Not chronological order, mind you!

1 : Some green salad and meat (T-bone I guess) baked 'taters! lemons
2 : Fish with taters salad, (the WOII smashes both the fish and the taters with the fork) with lemon.
3 : pudding with cherries after the fisrt DC (not sure what kind o' pudding maybe it was)
4 : hairy pork with old taters and lemon (Sülze)
5 : lemon and the special cocktail
6 : in Vigo, they have various fruits and baked goods!
7 : Johann eats a whole orange while they are grounded in the Strait of Gibraltar
8 : and the last thing the beer on the way home!

Thats it...not sure if this is all!

The captain's having a sandwich while his crew's frantically trying to repair the boat (Gibraltar).

What's in the u-boat-special coctail anyway:-??

Try ham with mildew. It's the greatest:p!

Oh my, how I'd love that! Food hanging just by my bed, ripe for the taking! I'd have to cool my bedroom to fridge temperature, though:roll:.
