Trouble with mission "Petropawlowsk"

Hi,

a few days ago I bought "Dangerous Waters". It's my first simulation of modern submarines. Before I played only "Aces of the Deep" and "Silent Hunter 3".

Maybe my questions were already answered......somewhere in the world wide web. If this is the case then kick me and spit on me, if you like.
But I have trouble with the first mission of the "Russian Rebellion"-campaign, called "Petropawlowsk".
I play the 688-submarine - the mission is to identify all naval traffic.
But I don't really know what to do. How to identify a ship / fulfill the mission ?
I already classified some ships in the mission - found out the type and marked russian vessels as "enemy".
But is this all I have to do ?
What I really don't understand: Let's say I have a track "S01" and I believe
It's a russian "Oskar II"-submarine, I classified "S01" as "Oskar II" and as "enemy" and all this is correct....it's really a "Oskar II". What now ???? Is this all I have to do? But I could change the classification afterwards....change to "Perry"-class frigate or any other vessel. When is the mission fulfilled ?

By the way.....must I really classify russian vessels as "enemy" to fulfill the mission ?
I suppose so - but why ? Why not as "neutral" ?
There's nothing in the mission briefing about this.
Does it matter at all ? Or have I only to determine the type of the ship ?

And there's another problem: I always get identified myself !
How do I stay undetected ?

So....I hope somebody can help me.

Greetings,
Amaris

Firstly its petropavlosk, secondly to gain contacts you must use sonar broad band for surface and bio's narrowband for submarines (pref use the towed array).

Id also advise you not to try the campaign untill you get totaly used to the platform otherwise you wont go anywhere.

Quick mission and choose the platform ect ect start there get used to the 688i then take her into campaign.

I cant realy guide you through the 688i classification process on its sonars as im an akula driver so im sure theres a few 688i divers on here who can help.

I think you'll have to do the following: Go to the periscope station and mark every surface contact. As easy as that. If I'm wrong, then shame on me!:p :rotfl:

Well...I play the german version and the mission is actually called "Petropawlowsk" there - didn't know the english name.

But I think you misunderstood me a little bit. My problem isn't working with the sonar or other "technical issues".
I want to know when a mission goal is considered as fulfilled !

It's said in the mission briefing that all ships in the area must be identified. But what is meant by "identify" ?
Is it sufficient to click on "classify contact" and mark e.g. track "S01" as "Oskar II" or "Slava" ?
I think hyperion2206 understood me, but is he right ?
The mission briefing doesn't say anything about this. It also doesn't say if russian rebel ships should be marked as "enemy" or "neutral" - or if it matters at all !

To answer your first question: When you completed a mission you hear a voice saying "Mission accomplished. Continue with your mission" or "Mission accomplished. Report for debrief."
Concerning the 1. mission: I think you just have to mark every surface contact. Perhaps you have to detect some submarines as well. However you do not need to classify them, so you just have to detect all sonar contacts and DW will tell you when you detected all subs in the area.
If you want to we can discuss this in German via PM.

Okay, thanks.
Maybe I can answer one questions myself: I seems that the russian rebel ships should be classified as "neutral" - at least all contacts I got via link / radio message were classified as "neutral" not as "enemy".

Hi Amaris,

All you have to do is "Visually Classify" the targets, which means (as was said above) all you need to do is Mark the contacts with your Periscope. It helps to make the initial detection with other sensors (Sonar NB/BB, etc) but in order to satisfy the objective you need to create a Visual contact with the Periscope. I suppose the word "Classify" is misleading since you don't HAVE to Classify the contact, only detect is Visually.

Since your English is excellent, I will post the English version of the 688(i)'s mission tasking in case the German translation was confusing in the German version of DW... :(

688(I) TASKING -- Indication and Warning: Rebel Threat Assessment [Mission Bias: Neutral]

====================

FROM: COMMANDER SUBMARINE GROUP SEVEN
TO: COMMANDER USS TOPEKA (SSN 754)
INFO: COMMANDER US PACIFIC COMMAND
COMMANDER US PACIFIC FLEET
COMMANDER US SEVENTH FLEET

SUBJ: OPERATION ORDER 1-06

1. BACKGROUND.

A. FOR MONTHS, THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN INCREASINGLY REPRESSIVE AND ANTI-DEMOCRATIC. THE RECENT ELECTIONS WERE MARKED BY BOTH INTIMIDATION OF INDEPENDENT PARTIES AND APPARENT ELECTORAL FRAUD. THE INCUMBENT PARTY WON BY A 99.8% LANDSLIDE, BUT VOTER TURNOUT WAS WEAK, ESPECIALLY IN THE OUTLYING PROVINCES. THE FAR EASTERN PROVINCES HAVE SEEN ESPECIALLY STRIDENT PROTEST, WHICH HAS RECENTLY THREATENED TO TURN VIOLENT. FOLLOWING A BLOODLESS COUP, THE RUSSIAN FAR EASTERN PROVINCES HAVE SECEDED FROM RUSSIA, AND ARE UNDER THE CONTROL OF A CABAL OF REBELLIOUS MILITARY OFFICERS. THE REBELS HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED THEMSELVES OR STATED INTENTIONS. THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT IN MOSCOW HAS ISSUED A TERSE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE COUP, AND STATED THAT IT DOES NOT ACCEPT THE SECESSION. OTHER GOVERNMENT, INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES, HAVE TAKEN A WAIT-AND-SEE POSITION AND EXPECTED CLARIFICATION OF THE REBEL POLITICAL INTENTIONS.

B. RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE HAD PROVIDED AN EARLY WARNING OF POTENTIAL TROUBLE IN THE FAR EAST, AND THE GOVERNMENT RESPONDED BY SENDING SUBMARINES FROM THE NORTHERN FLEET UNDER THE ICE TO THE PACIFIC. SURFACE SHIPS AND SSBNS COMMANDED BY LOYAL CAPTAINS SORTIED FROM PETROPAVLOVSK AND VLADIVOSTOK IN AN APPARENT ATTEMPT TO AVOID LOSING CONTROL OF THE ENTIRE PACIFIC FLEET.

C. THE REBELS ARE ASSUMED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE REMAINING SHIPS, WHICH MAY INCLUDE SSBN SUBMARINES THAT WERE BEING REPAIRED AND WERE UNABLE TO GET UNDERWAY. NO WARSHIPS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED LEAVING EITHER PORT SINCE THE COUP. IN ADDITION TO THE INTENTIONS OF THE REBELS, THERE IS CONCERN THAT THEY MIGHT ATTEMPT TO SELL RUSSIAN MILITARY HARDWARE, POSSIBLY INCLUDING NUCLEAR AND BIOCHEMICAL WEAPONS AND TECHNOLOGY, IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN ASSISTANCE AND SECURE FUNDING

2. MISSION.
A. PENETRATE AS POSSIBLE THE AVACHINSKAYA INLET AND CONDUCT INTELLIGENCE GATHERING, SURVEILLANCE AND RECONNAISSANCE. OBJECTIVE IS TO IDENTIFY AND REPORT THE SURFACE SEAGOING ORDER OF BATTLE WITHIN RYBACHIY SUBMARINE BASE AND KAMCHATKA SHIPYARD.

B. MONITOR ALL SHIP TRAFFIC INTO AND OUT OF AVACHINSKAYA INLET. OBJECTIVES ARE TO (1) IDENTIFY ALL WARSHIPS INCLUDING SUBMARINES ACTUALLY OPERATING FROM THIS PORT. YOU ARE TO DETECT AND VISUALLY CLASSIFY ALL SURFACE ASSETS AT THE HARBOR ENTRANCE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE. (2) IDENTIFY FOREIGN MERCHANT SHIPPING THAT MIGHT INDICATE COOPERATION FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WITH THE REBELS.

3. EXECUTION.
A. RULES OF ENGAGEMENT. YOU ARE AUTHORIZED TO ENGAGE OTHER WARSHIPS ONLY IF (1) THEY HAVE SHOT AT YOU (HOSTILE ACTION) OR (2) YOU HAVE UNAMBIGUOUS INDICATIONS THEY ARE PREPARING TO SHOOT AT YOU (HOSTILE INTENT).

B. YOU MUST NOT BE IDENTIFIED INSIDE FOREIGN TERRITORIAL WATERS. TAKE ANY ACTION NECESSARY TO SAFEGUARD YOUR IDENTITY UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES. RUSSIAN FORCES ARE LIKELY CONDUCTING INTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS AGAINST THE REBELS, BUT THE POSSIBILITY OF ATTEMPTS BY OTHER NATIONS CANNOT BE EXCLUDED. REMAIN COVERT AT ALL TIMES (CRITICAL).

4. COMMAND AND CONTROL.
A. COPY THE SUBMARINE BROADCAST AT LEAST EVERY 6 HOURS.
B. ALL REPORTS TO COMSUBGRUSEVEN.

Thanks! That's it. The translation was correct but I missed the "visually classify". On the other hand.....even if I wouldn't have missed it, I hadn't known that it means
clicking the "Mark"-button on the periscope.

Okay, thank you again
