Gottenhafen - funny bug - in many campagin

In many campaigns/mods (eg. GW1.1 etc.) i was seen realy anoying bug, poland port/city Gdynia appeared as german kreigsmarine base Gottenhafen already on september 01.1939.

In reality german counqer city of Gdynia on september 14.1939. - navy base Oksywie fallen on september 19.1939.
Other question - when german start to instaling Kriegsmarine base in Gdynia (german named Gottenhafen) ?

I Think it was much later - maybe winter 1939/1940 ?

sorry for my english
greatings from Poland

Hi Jack! Welcome to SubSim.

I agree, I've read about the Germans taking Gdynia and renaming it. In fact, the first time I tried to attack Gdansk I had a Polish destroyer chasing me and I ran to 'Gotenhafen' hoping I would find help there.:rotfl: I too would like to see it properly named and then changed at the correct date.

Your English is fine; I had no problem reading your post.

So what are the correct dates and name changes ?

I just have Gottenhafen as a land unit not even a harbour and certainly not a Gdynia on my map

If you have the dates would be gratefull so can add it

I have the Time-Life 'World War Two-Day By Day', but I can't get to it right now. Maybe in a few weeks. Then I can start work on my Dunquerke/Seebruge/Normandy update again, and maybe add Gdynia as well.

Thanx Steve

I thing, those date are correct..

Before german ocupation on Polish (small) coast wasn't any german unit, city or harbour...

This is no big problem, but Gdynia was build in 1920-30th from very small fishing vilage to big sea port whith about 200k peoples in 1939.

Somewhere above 1938 Gdynia has the bigest reloading goods on Balitic Sea.

We can search for Polish coast map from that time and web materials.

Greatings from Gdynia:sunny:

ps.

Gdansk (Danzig) before war was set by Nation Ligue as Free City of Gdansk and theoreticaly it nor belong to German nor to Poland
Practicality Gdansk was dominated by german peoples, who make big troubles to polish trafic, exclude Poland from sea.
It give rise to build Gdynia as independent from german polish port/naval sea base city.
Even in Gdansk to september 01 1939. there weren't any regular German land/air unit, there was only Police, and from august 25,there was German shool battleship Shlezwig-Holstein know as a starter of second world war. There was also one Polish company in Westerplatte (Polish transit station on entrance to port Gdansk) and they were defending they position for 7 day without any suport.
Polish naval base Hel (4x152mm Bofors etc.) fight to october 01 when the Polish rearadmiral Unrug ordered capitulation of last polish soldier in polish coast.
Verry Sorry for history lesson.

bigboywooly 07-20-06 03:55 PM

Dont be sorry about the history lesson
Its your country and for most of us the Polish campaign is less known
Thanx for the dates
Will have to look at my map as I said I dont even have Gdansk on one install

jack_410 07-20-06 04:17 PM

As i say early tis is not big problem.
One of the problems of small "bigest" white-red fleet:lol:

Now that I read your 'history lesson' (and it's a good one) I recall a line from the 'Day By Day' book; something to the effect that Gdynia was the major seaport for Gdansk.

Now I understand why they said that. My thanks as well for clearing it up.

There are some map, presenting Polish situation in 1939, and Polish coast.
