New Guy on the block, what mods to get

Hi all,
I am new to the game and have enjoyed playing the standard out of the box game for some time now. I was wondering what Mods all of you sugest and where can I get them? I have seen a number of diffrent mods available here ate Subsim but I was hoping for some advise from all of you.

thanks
Mark

Let me get you started with the supermods, which are giant mods put togethor by large teams designed to change many aspects of the game.

Get the NYGM mod if you really want to feel the sting of seawater on your skin -- NYGM 2.0 is the most realistic out there, with aggressive destroyers being the main addition. NYGM is about GAMEPLAY, with very little to none eye-candy.

GW, IUB, and... well, the rest, are about eye-candy. The most popular is by FAR Grey Wolves.

Since you are just beginning (?), I suggest you go with the graphics-heavy mods (GW!). Once you have the hang of this "mod" thing, maybe you could challenge yourself with NYGM. NYGM really is loads of fun and is my personal preference.

I hope thats a little helpful, if not there are bound to be loads of other replies to supplement mine :D.

Well it all depends on what you want out of your game.

What kind of gameplay are you after?
Are you into alot of realism?
Are you just looking for graphics enhancements?

So the more info you can give us in terms of what you want. The better we will be able to help you out.

Wrong. IuB was designed to integrate realism (RuB) and all additional "content" mods, including eye candy. GW is the same - the differences in realism are pretty minor. ASFAIK the major "realism" thing about NYGM is that the score is in tonnage rather than renown. Shrug. Never played it myself so don't know of any further "realism" issues.

Which makes sense, because IuB is no longer updated, and GW is pretty much the same as IuB anyway, just more up-to-date.

The last thread that dealt with the supermods (I started it:nope:) ended in a big fight between GW and NYGM fans. The best idea is to try one of the super mods and then the other. Scroll through many of the threads past which have details about them. Also check out the website for GW (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/TGW/) and then the NYGM stuff (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=90285). NYGM has a more in depth manual than GW but NYGM's changes are more pronounced so I guess it takesmore reading to figureout whats happened. And browse Terrapin's site (http://mpgtext.net/u-boot/component/...page/Itemid,1/) but you'll have to wait cause it's been hacked (again). Treat the mod section like a chili festival and try it all.

As for the "Realism" for any of the mods well that is always debateable as since to my knowlege none of our moders (im not knocking any of our moders btw just stating fact) actualy served aboard a uboat in ww2, or blew up a ship with a torpedo that has similar damage potential to the ones the germans used. So they are all founded on that modder's opinion on what is "realistic" (and what is possible to mod in the game).

In the end i suggest trying the 2 main super mods (Grey Wolves and NYGM) and decide for yourself which feels right to you :)

Oh ya and welcome to the forums. :) there are lots of guides and other helpfull stuff in this forum, i suggest you give them a good searching for tips etc.

I agree with Neon!

Take booth and do some testing and soul searching.

Me for example, I have 3 SH3 installs one GW, one NYGM and my own modded stuff.

Use all and have fun! The mates that make the mods are awesome guys, and it would be insulting to prefer one over the other!

You know i really got to tell ya, GW is alot more then eye candy. Doubly so after next release. Kapt's gonna strangle me for this, but because im kinda tired of the false "Gw eye candy" comments, im going to give a sneak peak at what you might find coming to you in the next GW.

This is a pre alpha screenshot of some new flotilla configurations ive been working on:
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/flot_1.jpg
While i can't say anything about the status of the black sea campaign , i can say that the indian ocean campaign is nearing completion, because im the guy whos been working on it.

The following is a series of pre alpha screenshots i made while doing a sanity check on the work ive been doing:

A convoy somewhere in the indian ocean:
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/convoy_test_1.jpg

Taken just before i went in for a periscope attack. Scored 3 hits.
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/convoy_test_2.jpg

Unfortuantly for me, the weather was a bit too calm which made for great sonar conditions, and the reworked sensors made my life a little more..... intresting.. Infact, here's me after being forced to the surface by a depth charge that exploded along my starboard side along the hull. It destroyed both disal engines and i lost 75% of my fuel. Obviously im just waiting for the bitter end as the escort that did the depth charging, now does the ramming.
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/convoy_test_3.jpg

I'm such a popular guy, he went out of his way to say hello.
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/convoy_test_4.jpg

Close encounters of the worst kind:
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/convoy_test_7.jpg

Now whats intresting about these screenshots is that the ramming escort is actually shielding me from incoming shellfire. Im sitting there at about 5% hull integrity, wondering why im not dead yet. Not a GW bug, just a bug with the AI in general that cannot be fixed. Then again, friendly fire does occur in war, so why not in sh3 as well?
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/convoy_test_6.jpg
After this picture, im obviously sunk. The whole affair made for a great show.

Now all of this is a work in progress, and all of this, is IN ADDITION TO what is already in the GW mod. So, just eye candy? I don't think so ;)

P_Funk 07-20-06 05:46 AM

WICKED! Hope you don't get in too much throuble.

bigboywooly 07-20-06 08:23 AM

I dont care how much trouble you get in for that Decimus:o
Been waiting for a sneak preview since it was announced work was starting
Looking good

I agree with you on the statement GW is so much more than eye candy too
The balance is great , between gameplay and " Historical interpretation " lol - dont like the word realism

But to be fair to our noob - you really should try both GW and NYGM before making your own mind up

Good Points Rose.

Its funny that I said the samething you said (in a shorter version) in another thread some days ago and was immediately attacked by certain groups! Vicious! Such a rivalry here!

NYGM gives you the choice to use Single Ship Contacts on the map or not

WOOHOO!!!!!

Finally someone else who hates using the term "realism" and likes using "Historical" as much as I do.

I agree as well that your best bet would be to try them both and choose that way.

Now it's my turn to risk getting into trouble. Just to set the record straight, you weren't attacked for taking a side; everybody has preferences. You were attacked for the rude, condescending way in which you did it. You talk about other people being viscious, but you post basically said "Mine rocks, yours sucks".

And just so you won't think I'm biased, I like both mods, for different reasons, and I use bits and pieces of both, as well as other mods I'm not sure were included in either (but are probably in one or both, and I just didn't notice).

Accidental friendly fire is good and all, though i sure do hate when they purposly start shooting at each other, i cant count the times ive watch 2 destroyers from the same country suddenly get mad at each other and open up on each other till one is sunk (thats not a GW bug, an old sh3 one).

Rose 07-20-06 12:40 PM

Ahh! I didn't mean to start any arguments here. In fact, after it was mentioned that you should try both GW and NYGM, I felt most partial to that idea. Those are the two main ones out right now. Of course I have to use NYGM for Wolves at War (how do I make dual installs so I can use GW?), but this new GW (soon-to-be)release looks really amazing. I mean, a flotilla in Penang?! And Constanza?! Absolutely great additions guys, keep it up.
