There is only the one version. To make it work on XP you need to download a program called DosBox. Do a search for DosBox and you should find several threads that will help.

You don't need DosBox. The game runs well on XP. The only thing which makes trouble is the intro video:

Quote:

SH and XP -
The point at which SH crashes is at the opening intro cines - if you manage to bypass that, SH will run quite well without any tweaks other than running it in Win95 compatibility mode. And the secret to bypass the intro scenes is simply by deleting the three relevant files in the cines directory - i.e. copyr.smk, logo444.smk and shin.smk. (This of course assumes you have the done a full install with all the cines files on the HD.) ...

It just depends on your system and the positions of the stars. It works on XP but you just have to find the way that works for you.
Try: http://www.subsowespac.org/silent-hunter-dosbox.shtml
It's like 99% percent guaranteed to work.
You can also do a search of this forum for Silent Hunter 1 threads. There are a lot.

I tried the removing the intro movie method yesterday, and it works!! The only other settings I had to change was running it in Windows 95 compatibility mode, and the soundcard setting to a Soundblaster or 100% compatible from the SB Pro.

Hmmm. I'll give that method a try. Would love to fire the old subsim up one more time. :hmm:

Heh, I was clearing one of the cupboards in the study room the other day and found my boxed copy. :)

WOW !

I haven't see that game in years and all this time, it was only 3 files! My Xp-pro
doesn't like DosBox for some reason. Could be my strict anti-everything software!
I'm off in the dust of time's shelf...

I just wanted to say geee, Thanx Buddy!
