Ever gotten into a firefight with something else than a PT boat or merchant?

Just wondering how many here have been forced to shoot it out with an armed ship (except Elcos or late-conflict Merchants - we've all been there;)) due to inability to dive?

I was playing the Grey Wolves super-mod, and I was entering Scapa Flow on the surface in broad daylight (forgetting that radar, the naked eye, and hydrophones work through solid rock in Silent Hunter III:ping:). I was detected by a destroyer, and while trying to make my way out of the narrow passage I was in (the Southern-most of the Eastern passages), out of desperation I manned the VIIB's deck gun and ordered it to start shooting at the approaching destroyer.

The game ended as a tie. I grounded the sub once (u-turns in narrow passages are hard:roll:), but ended up, fortunately, behind a barricade ship for cover as the destroyer closed in. Then my assailant ran herself aground and the game crashed.

Who else?

Me, but not because I had to. I wanted to try it out at full speed at night. It was a Flower Corvette(?) I think, and I decided to give it a little 88mm love. Unfortunately I got some crazy love back, and got wet.

You mentioned u-turns ... My worst episode was deep in the port of Curacao with an XXI. Somehow the french navy saw/heard me when I had my fat back to the sea, and I had to make a u-turn - at periscope depth - with a docked T3 on each side. The XXI turns as well as a derailed train, so there was not much warpaint left when I finally could put it in second gear. I think I actually scraped along one of the walls for a full two minutes.

The subsequent road rage made me fire alot of torpedoes after hasty and sloppy measuring. Great game, this.

I only fight in surface if is necesary

i was sneaking through gibraltar but i found a heavy scorts presence,i was detected and depth charged ,unable to scape, so i surfaced in the middle of the fog at flank speed and i had to sink a fast boat with the 20 mm and 37 mm heavy flak.

finally i scaped with a member of the crew wounded and little hull damage by gunfire

this wasnt me but my dad ( the one who bought the game and got me hooked :D ) anyways after he missed with a torpedo(against a flower 'vette he surfaced and shot at it with you guessed, his flak gun (fyi it was behind him[He had shot a aft torpedo]) anyways it caught up and hit him from the back and pushed him at about 10 knots for a couple minutes before it broke off and slid along his side (with my dad going full auto on his flak gun lol) , at this point the flower pulls ahead and turned and he pulled his uboat around to chase him and finished him off with his deck gun :p

I love to shoot flower corvettes whenever I get the chance to do that. I surface to their stern, where they can't shoot back with their forward deck gun. Whatever turn she tries to make, I allways stay on her back....she is shorter and more maneouvrable, but I have the advantage of speed. Her AA shells can't reach me at 1500 metres, by my deck gun ravages her stern. It all ends up as a sea dog fight :). Unless somebody comes to help her....she is doomed. This dog fight usually takes much time, because she does sharp turns, adn so do I at flank speed. This ruins my gunners aiming every time, and a lot of shells go waisted.

With my IXB U-706 Vs Nelson Destroyer

that bloody ship just came out of no where....dôh Sonar-Radio room not occupied by crew and I had no watch crew on the deck...:damn: (dont ask me why.)
Suddently I see on my map that there is an Ship...and I looked checked distance...and 5 second later my Sub Icon turned red and he started to shoot...and I ofcourse Shot back :stare:

Funny this subject came up, last night I changed my reload time to zero on SH3C just for a laugh and I started to hunt down destroyers. I successfully sunk the first one but I suffered alot of damage taking on the second one, which was too much for my crew to deal with.:dead:

So it ended in a draw, great fun while it lasted.

Early war period I won't mind taking on a Flower corvette if it is night and I can get the first shot in, but I'll only do this if I am feeling really game.

I take on flower corvettes on the surface most of the time my crew last night took on a Black Swan on the surface,(I thought they were takeing out stragglers from a convoy I just demolished):damn: I had too take the deck gun myself although she was a blazing wreck all her forward guns were destroyed but her rear gun was still intact but after about 20 rounds of HE into her she went down, won't be doing that again in a hurry.

A couple of times i have surfaced to make the escorts speed up a little, to give them a nice stern shot with an Acoustic.

Was on my first GW patrol this morning and after a very long, boring patrol of finding nothing at all I stumbled across a huuuge convoy of 20+ ships.. Escorting it, but very spread out were 4 flower corvettes and a destroyer. I was getting frustrated as I could not catch up to the convoy while submerged so I said 'screw it' and surfaced. I was quickly detected, and at first scared I tried submerging, but was rammed head on by the first corvette. This forced me to surface to repair the dmg, so I manned the deck guns.. I was surprised how easy the corvettes are to kill. All you have to do is blow up the front turret and they can't hurt you. I killed all 4 corvettes in this manner.. Now the destroyer, I can't deal with. So annoying, because if I could somehow rid myself of this destroyer the whole convoy would be mine. I dont know what corvettes they were... It was 1942.

Biggest thing? Fiji Class Cruiser... for a few seconds. ehrm

but the biggest thing i've had a decent battle with was the River Class DE, magazine shot and the bugger slept with der fish. took about 20 shots, must have been a good shot too as we were playing 'chicken' at the time (coming at each other head on.) whee! kablam. -ve 1 DE

I always enjoyed drawing friendly fire onto anything I can get close enough to. You can wreak havock on a HG group like this, but there isn't much of a future in it...

I had this funny thing once, it was during the final training mission when i decided to surface a bit to overtake the convoy after my succesfull first attack.

The flower corvette spotted me an charged towards me so i dived and positioned myself between her and the other destroyer. I dived deep to avoid dephtcharge attacks and continued to pursue the convoy when i realised that something was not quit right. I checked the external view and saw the little flower corvette was pummeling the destroyer into oblivion with her forward gun :)

It took a while with me staying submerged, but i managed to overtake the convoy (surfaced later on), attacked it once more and got all the ships this time, sank the small corvette and to add to the insult, with my last torp i sank the burning hulk of the completely wrecked stationary destroyer as the last ship to go down :arrgh!:

Back in my multiplay-online SHII/DC days I was helping someone learn how to do it. We selected a scenario that had a battleship in it. After we were done with the actual session he decided it would be cool to surface and attack the big ship with his deck gun. I think he lasted 20 seconds or so.
