In my experience it does, if you do it often and repeatedly. The first time I got homing torpedoes I wanted to try them out (who wouldn't!). So I got myself in front of a convoy, watched the escort steam pass me then started banging the depth sounder, a few tried, the escort went to full speed turned in my direction and came charging in, only to get my homing torpedo right in the face :)

So it does work imo, but you must do it repeatedly and quickly, a single check however probably won't get anyone interested in you.

I'm a bit disappointed too if the depth ping doesnt give away your position.
Anyways I've been trying to avoid it's use cuz I tho it would give away my position and I'm going to keep playing like that..

You seem certain of this, how did you find out it has no effect ?? :hmm:

Not a challenge, just a question

If indeed that is correct, kinda sad as I have used mine very sparingly in combat situations

Am I severely misunderstanding something here?

Isn't an echolot something that fires a ping straight down and then waits for it to return up? How would that give your position away? Is it the return ping that lets them find you?

[/ignorant:p]

kjuice 06-25-06 10:12 AM

i was under the impression that sound traves in all directions. so the ping would be heard by escorts.

Sawdust 06-25-06 10:16 AM

Perhaps the ping alerts the enemy to your presence, but does not give them your position until they can hear more noises. (Like the one gunshot rule from the movie "Red Dawn". :-)

the depth check is like an doorbell

1 time...Destroyers : ahh...whois there?
2 times...Destroyers : Must be an prank
3 Times...Destroyers : Oke! Where is he!
4 Times...Destroyers : God Dammit! Come over here you little bastard and I DC you to kingdom come!
5 Times...Destroyers : Thats IT!!! I got you now!
Torpedo Hit

hummm :nope:

perhaps the sonar frequency is one that the destroyers passive sonar canīt hear ??

tycho102 06-25-06 07:10 PM

I messed around with this issue awhile back. At 5000+ meters, they couldn't hear anything. Inside 2000 meters, they'll hear if you ping a whole bunch of times. Inside 1000 meters, one ping and they always came right after me starting in mid-1940.

This is solely based on convoy escorts.

JScones 06-26-06 03:54 AM

From page 31 of the game manual:

"...Do not forget that these pings can disclose your location".

Not conclusive, but somewhat suggestive, especially coupled with tycho102's tests and the experiences of others.

I won't be chancing it.
