Something I've always wondered...

For what purpose do U-boats have a serated bar at the front? Looks like wire cutters used on some military jeeps...anyone know?

Vikinger 06-07-06 05:56 PM

Its for cutting of fishing nets i guess :)

Not sure about it but ive read that somewhere

joea 06-07-06 05:57 PM

Anti-sub net cutter...not sure how effective it was though. :hmm:

Kurushio 06-07-06 05:58 PM

Heres Something Ive Always Wondered

How can someone with that many posts not know something so fundamental.

This reminds me of what you posted in April:

How did you get over 2000 posts, and not know this? Or be able to figure this out on your own.

And while your being dressed down.

When asking question this fundamentally simpleton, you should leave the flag at home.

Dismissed.
You got your first warning for writing this, now you get your second. One more strike and you are out.

@Manock:

Maybe the guy have bought SHIII just recently. Post count doesnt mean that, if I have 5000 posts I have been playing SHIII long time. There are other forums on SubSim too, not just the SHIII one.

You are right...I used to be on the official UBI forums and all they ever talk about over there is how to make the bean soup they used to eat on U-Boats. Maybe I came across it once and just forgot it.

Lemme chime in!

The part of the Boot you mean are called Netzt-abweiser in german!
Which translates pretty in: Net-deflector!
:know:

I'm pretty sure it is a design hangover from WW1 as well. I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

I wonder how much use they saw in WW2?

Good question. I know that they reverted back to cable only on later boot Types, without the "cutter" on the bow!
And another thing. The places where the cables joined each other before the Tower has porcelanic pods. Because they also used the cables as antenas!

I've said it before and I'll say it again for Manock's benefit...

Of special note is the fine print at the bottom of the image.

Does anyone know how effective the netguards were?? Is there any historical evidence of boats getting snared??
