how do i do it? they stay greyed out no matter if i have a target selected or not :damn:

How would you be able to do it after launch in reality? If you're talking about before launch, turn off the autocrew.

it was prior to launch i was referring

although some time ago i played a sub sim where you could guide torps enroute ( i presume they were attached by wire to the firer)

I had this same problem. Took a while to figure it out. I think you have to select the target on the display adjacent to the firing screen...something along those lines.

Yup, some torpedoes are wire guided, but that is only for subs. The helicopter torpedoes have no wire guidance.
