HMS Gotland

Headline - ''GOTLAND REMAINS UNDETECTED ONE YEAR AFTER''
The crafty Swedes have been giving the USN a run-round !

Gotland has the capacity for up to two weeks of air independent progress at up to 5 knots . :|\

Yeah. But the article also indicates that US destroyers have found ways to track these subs. The fact that they wish for further training indicates that the process is not refined, and perhaps they're testing new equipment.

Bellman 05-27-06 12:54 AM

Who knows if they really can track it ! All we have is the 'claim' of one bullish Destroyer Captain.
Did he go active ? If so at what risk to his ship and (possibly) a Groups position ?

I dont thing anyone needs to go into macho mode here - nobodys criticising USN. Rather the reverse in saying Heck this sub EVEN beat the USN expertise on this occasion ! But, at the same time, giving full credit to this excellent sub and her even better crew !

After a year, I suppose they must have gotten enough sniffs to develop a very good NB sound profile, which will make tracking easier, but it won't help them if they go track another class sub of similar silence, or perhaps a sister ship.

Bellman 05-27-06 04:00 AM

Well my guess would be they have learnt a heck of a lot from such a severe test and have developed tactics and techniques for success. A time extension may just indicate USN building on experience and honing operations.

The Swedes always were damned good at most military things they laid hands on. :D I hope there will soon come a NATO-sub which can efficiently track Ohios, perhaps even Virginias.

Well I live in a country that is protected from nuclear attack by those Ohios so I hope no sub, not even one of ours is built that can track one! :yep:

I think that we know all that the Swedes stay there for another year, because the Americans were not able to detect the Götland and need more time to develop a working tactic. We know also, that the main purpose, for the Americans, is to find a solution against countries which own diesel submarines, and more specifically, against countries with Kilo (you know which one I am talking for). In fact, the article makes a reference of it at the end.
Also, the Navy could not acknowledge loudly and publicly that they were unable to track a sub, and a potential threat, that is non-American. So, I would say that Belman is right in is comment.
