Far sighted watch crew

Its Dec 39 and am in my 1XB just of Calais

Ship spotted

no bearing so am scanning thru periscope---nothing

ok so scan again pressing the L button regulary to pick up contact

Aha a T2 stationary ? yes 31km away in dover harbour :o

Hmm that cant be the one surely - a C2 stationary in Dover finally a Tribal DD there too

Odd - scan some more ah at last a small merchant 10km away

Didnt realise the range went that far - nice to know as will try that again at sea and see what it picks up

Supriseing what WW II carrots did for the eyesight
my Watch officer can see a warship through 4 subpens, a couple of buildings and acouple of km after that. It's just a pity am in port and there not enemy targets.
But when at sea the Bastard ****s himself when he sees a DD and orders dive to pd and he cant spot a ship in later years like he can in port even if he could deck crew are useless and in 43 you get univited guests as well ie:-RAF,USAAF.

I make visual contact with just about every convoy I come across at over 30km.

I don't actually see them, but at least target them in the UZO at that distance pretty much every time.

Yeah, it's pretty much cheating, I know.

30km is do able on an aircraft carrier but not on a sub.

30km = about 16.2nm or 18.6 miles. This means your height of sight would have to be roughly 190 feet to see 30km on a crystal clear day.

Allowing for the UZO's magnification at best you shouldn't be able to see over 10nm

I agree about the UZO: it shouldn't make any difference in overall spotting distance. It's especially unrealistic that the Weapons Officer can identify and give accurate ranges at those distances. I still think 16 km should be no problem.
