Using Deck gun and Flak in rough water...how to change
I read here at one time how to modify the gun settings to allow them to be used in rougher water. I would like to try shooting in a more rolling sea and see how difficult that would be. I can no longer find the topic that showed the edit to make
Thanks, Ruggus |

If you edit it to =15,1.0 you can man your gun and flak in 15m/s and heavy rain and fog. Not realistic but you decide when to try, not the game :) |
You have to edit the cfg file for the particular sub you are in. Go to your SH3 folder then Data/Submarine. Open the folder for your boat type then the cfg file located within it. It has a line;
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] To use the deck gun and AA guns in any weather then change the 7 to 15 and the 0.1 to 1, so it now looks like this; StormConditions=15,1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] Now your crew can fire the deck gun and drown at the same time :D |
It isn't the rolling sea that makes gunnery diificult, it's the rolling sea rolling over your deck hatch that makes floating difficult. To use the gun in rough weather would be very, very risky.
There ought to be a weather restriction on moving external torpedos too. This operation would require the torpedo loading hatch to be open and that's a very big hole to have open close to the water. |
Iv'e stopped using my deck gun in heavy seas it just becomes pointless after a while seeing your gun crew holding there breath underwater when a big wave emmerses your sub.

I have my guns set to higher seas, mainly so I can use the flak gun. I also use x2 wave height, and never man the deck gun if I can see the water washing over the deck.
Agreed, I also only reload external torpedoes in calm weather. Ruggus, one thing you should be aware of is that the storm settings also control the watch crew's clothes. If you have it set for 15 m/s they will never put on the wet-weather gear. |
Can you set it for up to medium sea?, Like maybe 7 or 10. I think you should be able to use your flak gun at those wind speeds in an emergency. -Nightowl

I only reload external torps in calm weather.
And I only reload internal tubes on the surface in calm weather. Otherwise I submerge to reload torpedoes. Or stay submerged after a convoy attack until they are reloaded. But sometimes I forget, and have to resubmerge after I re-establish contact with the convoy. |
Thanks all, some very good points. I don't reload externals during rough weather but had never thought of the deck hatch for the gun being open. Or the oilskins for that matter. My crew doesn't need pneumonia!
