Did this just happen?

I launched a wake homing torpedo homing on one ship. While the one ship was trying to evade, another crossed very close in front of my wake homer. The torpedo SHOULD have detonated when it got struck the second ship. Instead, it passed through it and continued to home on it's original target.

It was one of the funniest things I've seen a torpedo do.

Was it one of these?

Seriously, I have fired a few wakehomers in heavy traffic, and never encountered what you described.
But then again, I can't remember any specific time where the torpedo may have passed THAT close to another ship.

Remember, if it does do that, it's not a bug, it's a feature.

The original pic is on this site, plus some other interesting WW2-era stuff.

SeaQueen: Because I have a lot of time on my hands today, I tried to duplicate the wakehomer situation you described. Each time I fired, the fish would always home in on the intended target regardless of what else was in or near it's path. On the fourth try, the target passed behind the "interference" ship, and sure enough, the torpedo passed right through it and on to the target.

Thus, I can only conclude, the torpedo is magic.

Hmm... there ought to be something I can do about this.

I'll take a look at the wakehoming doctrine along with the other stuff I'm doing for LWAMI 3.03. :)

Thanks for finding this SQ and for confirming it UB.

3 questions:

(1) LwAmi 3.03 :o  Did I rRead somewhere we had seen the last one ?

(2) Where is Amizaur ?

(3) What is a 'whisker' ?

LuftWolf 04-29-06 01:28 AM

Perhaps... that was before the breakthrough on the SLAM-ER. The modding projects will continue, but the future packaging is not set at this point.

Amizaur is still active on the mod.

I'd have thought you would have been able to use another ship as a decoy, ie you run across its wake and if by the time the torp reaches the crossover point if the decoy's wake is stronger thatn yours it would go after the decoy.

Weapons flying through solid objects are normal in this game. Easy to demonstrate with the sub SAM and any ship. Apparently, unless explicitly programmed to track and hit something, collision detection isn't done.

For weapons, you are correct.

I'm not entirely sure about regular torpedoes, but I suspect this does not work for them... based on the fact that back in stock DW you could drop a CM at any point before the weapon hits you and it will still home and explode on the CM.

GunnersMate 04-30-06 06:33 PM

Somehow I doubt they had a "Phased Cloaking Device" during WW2. :know:
However I may be mistaken. :hmm: :-j

Yes, but wasn't that a special case, where the weapon would decide to home on the sub or the CM once, and after that it would either completely ignore the sub, or the CM? And they do tend to ignore dead platforms, at least most of the time. With exceptions http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=51872
