Hermaphrodites
I wonder how a 1930's style hybrid Carrier-Battlecruiser battle would have been (I'm imagining a Star Wars style engagement, as the space ships there are technically hybrid Carrier-Battleships) as many early carriers were originally Battlecruiser designs.
Courageous Class Akagi and Kaga Eagle (ex-Cochrane class BB) Bearn (ex-Normandie class BB) Lexington Class Now, what if these ships had - as in the Japanese case - retained their heavy guns? Interesting stuff - instead of over the horizon engagements, you could have fleets of these 'hermaphrodites' actively seeking out and engaging the enemy at gun range, screened by their own aircraft. Sort of like the WW2 Battle of Samar (Leyte Gulf) except this time the carriers can hold their own. These hypothetical warships are another hobby of mine actually. In any case, I think I've worked on the modified 20" British BB and the G3 based on the model of the Brooklyn class cruiser. Could send those over to Horsa as well. Mountbatten |
The Kaga was also a BB - Tosa class. Her sister ship was sunk as a target in 1924. I guess you already know that though.
Would such a hybrid ship be possible? (I know about the Hyuga and Ise, but they were'nt full conversions at all). Wouldn't hanger space have to be sacrificed for ammunition magazines, for example? It still does sound like a cool idea to try though. |
