Just so you know...you cannot increase the intelligence of the AI.

The AI is hardcoded in the game and cannot be changed by the modders.

In a convoy the purose of the escorts was (is) to protect the ships. Prolonged searching for a sub takes the escort away from this duty.
Only a very small portion of subs wre sunk by DD and the probably of being sunk by a single DD during an attack was only 10-15%, if that; and early in the war, much lower. With the addition of forward throwing hedgehogs the DD kills got a little better but not much.
That means, the DD will not hound you for hours, but will return to escort duty.
Since you can't increse the AI of the DD's, you have to increase their dection ability, increase the damage of the depth charges, and/or
decrease the sub's resistance to damage. Timetravelers tweaker probably can do this.
