The Brits have humbled me!

Aug 1943 just finished fully upgrading my VIIC/4 Flak Uboat - top speed 20knots, packed with AA guns, latest radar, sonar, coating, snorkel this is one mean machine ready to show the Brits i mean trouble! :arrgh!:
So I request for a transfer to Bergen, my main objective is i want to patrol the AN area. In a previous patrol i enabled the Spy_Sat mod and notice in the AN area there is a Taskforce and a few convoys travelling up and down hugging the english coast. EASY PICKINGS I THOUGHT!. Using the stock game, it wont be easy getting there i expect alot of aircraft attacks, but i know my boat is ready for heavy action, my crew are all practically 5star generals, we are the best of the best.
Aug24th 2am, U775 sets sail on her secret mission. We reach AN41 to make our first contact, 2 cargoes C2 & C3 lurking in the fog travelling at 5 knots they must feel safe here, no uboat would hunt in brit infested waters. Well U775 just ruined there holiday. Down they went, it was like a scene from das boot when they attack the convoy, minutes later a destroyer turns up from nowhere, I ordered periscope depth & head straight for her, shes not zig zaging, so its a down the throat shot and down she went in a blaze of glory. We surface and make way for the coast in search of the taskforce. This is gonna be easy.
Then straight after the destroyer was sunk, somehow it must of woken the entire allied WW2 airforce. They just kept coming and coming, sunderlands, bombers, hurricanes, i stayed on the surface and fought the first group off, and the next and the next zigzaging all the way flank speed 20knots, wave after wave after wave and what seemed hr after hr - U775 shot down 13 aircraft and counting yet i must of made only 5 -6 kms during that time. No point in diving using snorkel as they still found me within minutes the snorkel was up & lightly damaging my AA guns. I surface to repair, and fought on the surface again.
The VIIC/4 Flak Uboat ( i dont know if thats the correct name) is capable of surving on the surface during aircraft attacks, why dive when your boat is rigged out like a mini fortress. This she can handle from what ive just experience. But the problem is i made no gain in mileage i couldn't get anywhere near the coast i didn't even leave grid AN41!! it was impossble. I just spent what seemed like hours fighting aircraft. In the end i decided to return to base still fighting off aircaft most of the way, last attack was within 30km from Bergen!
What a humble experience :88) With tail between the legs, i am now searching for a mod that will give me less aircraft for the stock game. I aint giving up yet on sinking that taskforce. :arrgh!:

If im right gizzmoe made a less aircraft mod once?

One could alter the aircraft ranges in the AIR.cfg file. It's quick but dirty. :arrgh!:

Hunting around England is asking for trouble anyway. Trying to decrease the amount of aircraft would seem a little unrealistic, but I think that it may be possible.

If you open the SH3 Mission Editor you can alter the land map by deleting the RAF bases in and around England to your liking... but this is only in theory because I've never attempted it.

The only mod that I've successfully completed is creating the "Operation Overlord" D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.

Having wave after wave of aircraft in packs of 3 to 5 is unrealistic :-j

realism is really not important, im trying to have fun here. Played using RUB mod since it came out, now trying to finish a campaign using just the stock game.

Thanks, i'll try editing the land map.

(sigh)

If you're just looking to have fun: Open the the Air.cfg file with your text editor. Modify all the Allied aircraft ranges to 100 km, save and exit. You'll never be bothered by planes again unless you venture into range.

It's quick and easy.

I presume you mean AirStrike.cfg? and i altered the range from 2500 to 100. Done, and about to test.

Thanks

[I could find no Air.cfg though.]

Edit: Change the range for each allied aircraft here.

To be honest your encounter with the brits, is fairly realistic.
A U-Boot was never a Flak-boat. Since it lacked speed and armor. The outer Hull of a boot was very thin.
A U-Boat is really weak when it comes to hard on hard. Wasn't build for that purpose. It is after all a Silent Hunter

The german were desperate having to face the closed gap, over the Atlantic.
And the Total air control of the Allies.
The flak and fancy cannons were only a poor attempt to keep their dying fleet alive.

But more cannons and conning tower with larger wintergardens prolonged only the dive time further. So you action packed partol was a normal day at work.

Keep in mind, that later in war, the statistic said that form 10 boot's sent out on patrol, only 2 will return.

So keeep on suffering Herr Kapitänleutnant

U-Flak is fun. The patrol after I got the 3 x twin M42s I got 65 aircraft. The renown paid for a lot of homing torpedoes :D I had lots of high-ranked flak gunners (gotta allow for attrition), tell them to fire at long range at only incoming aircraft. The biggest threat is from flaming Sunderland kamikazes. The rapid fire 37mm is death on small ships too. 100 rounds to sink a coastal merchant sounds like a lot until you realize it's like 25 seconds of fire from one twin mount.

It seems reasonable that as long as you're cruising on the surface near the coast during the day you'll be under constant air attack. Go submerged for a while and change course to get a bit of breathing room.

Daytime is for flakking, night is for travelling :)

i think that aircraft will keep returning to your last spotted position. I think they even estimate where you _will_ be based on your course and speed. After being detected by planes, I went under and travelled with the observation scope up for a day. For the first few hours, planes returned to my position, even though i had moved quite a bit since the first sighting. So I think they guess your course. Once you've had a good fight, travel underwater for half a day and you will probably lose them.

Maui 03-20-06 09:16 PM

Or you could just choose to not pick fights with defenseless cargos until you find the task force. Cruise the surface by night, creep underwater by day. At least that way you'll get in at least one good salvo before the planes choke the skies.
