Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games
Well day 1 of the XVIII Commonwealth games are drawing to a close in Marvellous Melbourne, and Australia are predictably in the lead on the medal table :D
In fact we are currently ahead of all the home nations combined tables. Which of my fellow commonwealth nation citizens will be following the games, and who is your pick for the #'s 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the final medal table? The opening ceremony was horrible, i dont really like those tings at the best of times but last nights was just embarrasing, and i dont think they followed a single royal protocal in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, no playing of God Save the Queen (full version), no 21 gun salute by the Australian Defence Force, no military personnel raising the flags (it was done by St Johns ambulance members :damn: !) Oh well, Im looking forward to the next 10 days of competition in my own city. England just beat Australia by 2 in the pool match of the rugby, we scored a try at full time and had to convert it after the siren but the kick missed, a good match but the result didnt go our way. http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com...ony_cwg101.jpg http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image...714_mcg203.jpg exactly 50 years after it was the centre of the olympics, the MCG now hosts the athletics and ceremonies of the commonwealth games. |
A nice thread for sport lovers.

I went to the Quarters of the rugby earlier today, NZ won easily over Canada, but Australia didnt have too much trouble in beating a talented South Africa. You are better at 7's, but we have a few Wallabies on our side, and in front of 55,000 aussies under the telstra dome roof anything could happen. Should be a great match. England clinched the victory after the siren against Samoa, so close to being an upset yet the pacific islanders dropped their guard right at the end to let the poms in for the match winning try :( . |

Honestly, I'm finding the cricket in South Africa much more interesting than the Commonwealth games.

Jung adjudged best athlete
http://in.rediff.com/sports/2006/mar/26cwgi-jung.htm Samresh Jung might have missed out on a record seven gold medals but the ace Indian marksman more than made up for it after being adjudged the 'Best Athlete of the 18th Commonwealth Games' in Melbourne on Sunday. |
