Snorkel

I hear people refer to this. Is this the same as the periscope, or something different? No, I don't know much about subs. :D

jasondef 03-05-06 11:26 PM

With a snorkel, the sub could stay submerged and just raise the snorkel to refill on oxygen and air, and run the diesels underwater to recharge the batteries, so you didn't have to expose the whole sub and surface instead.

trenken 03-05-06 11:31 PM

How do you use the snorkel? Is there a hotkey for it?

jasondef 03-05-06 11:38 PM

There is, "X" is up/down snorkel, but you have to wait until the technology becomes available later in the war, and then of course you have to "buy" it with renown and add it to your sub. I forget when exactly, but the tech tree when you're in base between patrols will tell you.

Mid 1943, IIRC.

jasondef 03-06-06 12:07 AM

Quillan and Trenken, what's your current avatar rank say? Is that in Chinese and why? I don't get it...

Tonnage_Ace 03-06-06 01:43 AM

What's the snorkel??? You have 280 posts. I'm confused.

jasondef 03-06-06 01:57 AM

I was initially confused also, a couple of weeks ago with a string of newb questions. But I think all the posts are from a different game's forum, and new to this game.

Tonnage_Ace 03-06-06 02:17 AM

Isn't it addressed in the manual though? Or on the Wiki? I was new to this game a couple months ago but at least I researched the manual, Wiki and past posts before I started asking questions like: What's a periscope? :hmm: Let's trim the fat on the posts shall we.

VonHelsching 03-06-06 02:50 AM

The sub community is very helpful even to the most newb questions.

What I did, say 8 months ago, was to start reading old posts and searching:

http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/search.php

The community manual was less full than it is today:

Dantenoc 03-06-06 05:47 AM

Even to this day, the comunity manual isn't very complete at all, and rarely goes beyond the most basic of explanations. There's a lot of info in this forum that nobody has bothered to put into the Wiki.

Cdre Gibs 03-06-06 05:53 AM

Just proves my point, wiki's are highly unreliable and dubious at best.

Jasondef ---> It means, Chinese Seaman. Or, to be more exact, Seaman of the Chinese NAVY.

Don`t know what`s the reason for such avatar though.

Good for you. Now stop hijacking my thread. I talked to John Channing (moderator) and he said I can ask whatever questions I want. So if you have a problem with that, talk to him.

Bye.

Easy there big fella.

While it is true that I did say that questions are always welcome and that most times you can expect a helpful reply, you do have some responsibility to help yourself. If someone points you to a resource it is always a good idea to check it out. You never know, you might just stumble across some other information that might enhance your enjoyment of the sim. In fact, you may even find the answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet!

And the last time I checked, they were all Neal's threads. We just get to use them from time to time.
