Check out Trillian -> http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/downloads/ out of the box you can contact to ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, AIM and IRC but I think there is a Plugin for GTalk as well (tho Plugins can only be used by Pro Users, not that much money at around $30).

One of the features I really like is to create "MetaContacts" where you group the various Messenger contacts of the same person. Eases up on a lot of clutter.

To be more precise: most of the Virtual Fleets you on the inet use ICQ to set up matches. But Virtual Fleets are not the only way to play online: you can try Hyperlobby, Gamespy or the CADC...

Gaim and Hyperlobby

GAIM (freeware) will run all your messengers and my favorite meeting place for MP games has been Hyperlobby.

Something that happened today reminded me to encourage anyone who wants to try multi-player to come to hyperlobby and join up. We have had players finally get into a group then disconnect. No one cares. A target is a target.
