When does the Blitz get cracking?
 

I confess my knowledge of WW2 is quite shocking especially when it comes to timelines and such. Presently I think I'm in April 1940 operating out of Kiel, I overheard a conversation at the bus stop recently about U-Boats operating out of St. Nazaire and such places in France but according to my map (Which has tons of new cities since IuB) the so called mighty Teutonic War Machine hasn't even given me the ability to operate out of Amsterdam nevermind Western France.

So, when precisely will I be able to swap my base around to something with something of a more Bresty flavour?

Also, when exactly do the Americans join the war?

France and Germany signed a ceasefire on June 22, 1940. The first operational U-boat base in France was Lorient, in July 1940. By the end of 1940, 1.Flottille will be in Brest, 2.Flottille in Lorient, 7.Flottille in St. Nazaire (in the game as in reality).

I think your switch should happen around September.

How about when the American enter the war? I'll take a wild stab in the dark in say July 1941...

Actually, Germany declared war on the US on December 11th, 1941 (one of the greatest head-scratchers in history; noone is entirely sure why - although you could say that the US was waging a de-facto war on (who else?) the U-boats from October 1941.)

The 7th was US on Japan (for obvious reasons) :)

First five U-boats arrived in American waters in mid-January 1942.

Wasn't it not because of some kind of cooperation agreement between Germany and Japan ? Germany and Japan worked together in some areas during the rest of the war.

I remember reading somewhere that after Japan had declared war on the US Germany had an obligation to do the same based on such an agreement.

Suppose it would not have gone this way, the war would have ended very differently...

As a member of the Axis, Germany had an obligation to go Japan's aid if war was declared on Japan by a third party. Not if Japan declared war on a third party. Which makes Hitler's decision such a head scratcher. The U.S. probably would have had to declare war on him at some point so he really didn't need to do it.
