Long time lurker, first time poster....
Ok, got that stupid comment out of the way. LOL
I bought and installed DW yesterday. I read the manual. I watched the vids. Ive searched the web for DW content. Now my questions is what is the best way to learn the game for someone whose only experience with subs is playing SHIII? Is there a certain way to get to know how things work? AKA play helo only or sub only for awhile? Thanks! |
Both the CADC (see my signature) and SubGurus website offer a number of tutorials and manuals for the various plattforms. That would be step one ... further you should check the CADC Calendar, and post your availabilities there or look if somebody is hosting a game. For starters JoGary has entered a number of days when he will be online and willing to teach ...

Concepts are so much different you'll have to un-learn much of what you learned for SH3 (which may be a good or bad thing, depends on how you look at it). Playing only MH60 helo is the easiest way to start - it is by far the least complex of all drivable platforms. FFG is the most complex. O. |
I'd stick to one platform and gradually learn to perform all its missions. Grab a simple scenario with one kind of objective (ASW, ASUW, Strike) and run it through with the manual at your side for when you forget how to do something.
Once you learn one platform, the learning curve steepens a bit and the others will come pretty quickly. |
Thanks for the leads!

If you are an experienced Uboat commander, you may find the Kilo your most comfortable starting platform, as the tactics are often very simliar, as compared to the nukes or air and surface platforms.

I've created a few basic scenarios using the Mission Editor to help train myself. Basically I put my preferred platform (sub usually) in the game with whatever enemy platform is useful for learning. Since you know the general area of the 'enemy' platforms you can practice detection and engagement without using Show Truth.
Also, I've found the quick missions helpful in learning the game. You usually only have to deal with one or two enemies and one or two neutral/friendlies. |
If you go for submarines I suggest to try the Los Angeles first. The interface is simpler than seawolf's, and the sonar and weapons are easier to use than Akula's. I think that the kilo, albeit one of my favorite platforms, is very frustrating for the first time, being the TMA more difficult and tedious without the towed array.
Also don't forget to study in depth TimmyG00's TacMan. You can found it in subguru's website in the downloads section: http://www.subguru.com/ |
I think that the best submarine to learn sonar is the akula.
Nothing can beat the user friendliness of the ssaz sonar. |
