Patch question
Hello from a relative beginner. I've installed DW and applied the latest patch, converted my SC missions and downloaded plenty more (planning to play lots of one-star missions to learn the platforms).
I'm not sure about the LWAMI realism mod though; I like the sound of it, but it does warn that some of the stock scenarios might be rendered unplayable due to altered detection ranges etc. I'm wondering it it would be better to hold off applying the realism mod for this reason.. I don't want to ruin the campaigns before I've even played them. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. TIA etc... |
:) When you instal LwAmi it contains a switching tool called JSGM.exe which allows you to sellect wich
version Vanilla or LwAmi to run during a game session. You will see at SubGuru that many missions have now been converted for LwAmi. A new version of which will be released shortly. Most MP players have opted to run LwAmi as it enhances the stock game in many ways and definitely improves the gameing experience. |
Red Storm Rising is generally improved by the mod.
All the mod does is replace files in the Database and Doctrine directories. Manually save those as a backup and you won't need to worry about anything being scewed up. You can add and remove the mod in seconds. |
Well, that warning has been in the mod readme for like four months now, and I still don't remember hearing of any scenario that was actually made worse by using LWAMI. :) :know:
Keep in mind, if you are just learning DW and don't really mind if some things are off or some weapons aren't exact at this point, don't worry about the mod, just focus on learning the game. The mod does make the game harder in terms of how well the AI performs and the extra gameplay features that are added that you have to keep track of on top of the game. Generally speaking, if you are totally satisified with everything you have experienced so far in terms of how accurate the game is, then don't worry about the mod. Once you feel you are looking for a challenge in MP or SP or have discovered a little gameplay thing that bothers you that the mod addresses (you can check the readme for 3.00B and I will have the readme for 3.00 hopefully done in the next 24 hours or so...), then install the mod. Enjoy your game! :up: Cheers, David |
Re: Patch question
Hey Holdit:
I am in the very same boat so to speak. I plan on making a few training missions. Very simple one one one's to learn the game's sub TMA feature. It not that hard to make a mission if you keep it very simple. The user manual for the mission editor is over 60 pages long. I am going to try to learn DW from the ground up. ie just the game with the 1.03 patch first. After I get that down I'll start looking at the other modes. I am doing this for one main reason. I read or I think I understood that the mods make the detection ranges shorter. While learning I need all the help hearing the other boats as I can get. Shortening the dectection ranges will make it harder for me to learn the game. I need more maneuveriong room and don't wish to be right on top of the enmey sub before I can hear them on sonar. After I get accomplished with the sonar and tma and feel like I need more of a challenge then I will fool around with the shorter detection ranges and add the mods. But this is just me and the way I do things. I am a slow learning type of guy. I like to take it one step at a time. Quote:

Re: Patch question
Lads,
Many thanks for the feedback and input, especially Luftwolf for taking time out from your Readme to answer. :up: I think I'll hold off on the realism mod for a little while and get the hang of the vanilla version. (Mmmm vanilla-ey....) Moose1am, I was thinking of doing something similar myself. if you'd be interested in comparing notes or swapping practice scenarios, feel free to drop me a line. All the best, P |
DW version 102->103??
My retail copy of DW is version 102. Can I use the cumulative 100-103 update patch or am I just better off staying with 102?

There are too many things they fixed albeit 1 or 2 minor things still remain to be sorted out. |
