DW on Steam Question

Thinking of buying this game via steam as i really want to get into it quickly. IF i did download, am i able to use mod files etc with etc or am i limited to official patches only and nothing else?

Hoping for a quick response.

So almost all of the doctrines, databases, 3D groups (textures, models), and particle effects are free to be edited and can remain that way without Steam overwriting them. ;)
