How do you prefer to play Dangerous Waters?

How do you prefer to play Dangerous Waters? Is it multiplayer that grabs you? The campaign game? Quick missions? Why?

I guess I should answer my own question. So far, making my own scenarios is my preferred method of using DW. It is interesting as I can base them on contemporary events. Also, working with the mission editor can be quite a learning experience about how the game operates and what it is capable of doing.

Re: How do you prefer to play Dangerous Waters?

Since I am just starting out I play the quick missions and some of the missions that were developed by others.

What I really would like to have is some good training missions where I can practice TMA without too many ships cluttering up the screen.

I like to take one platform at a time and learn how to use it.

I started out in Sub Command learning about TMA and the Ohio Class 688's. Next I went to the helo and learned about it. Then I studies how the PC3 works. Now I am playing with the SeaWolf and trying to learn about how she works.

I have a lot to learn and the learning is going slow for me.

You seem to have a good system for learning this complex sim. I took the same approach. Just hang in there and, with a little patience, you will have this sim down cold. (The printed manual helps too! :D )

BTW: a good way to practice is to make a quick scenario where it is you and one other ship that you place in the scenario. Then you know what is out there and can practice using sonar and TMA, etc. That is how I taught myself to use the towed array.

Multiplayer is really cool (it always is better). In DW it is especially good. But it also takes especially long time. You hardly play game under 1 hour. Some can take 4 hours.
I don't have that much time.

It all depends on the mission designer.
Its not to difficult to make scenarios that last not more than 1 hour in multiplayer.

I have to agree with Goldorak with whom I usually team up in multistation on a sub. I think the problem is that there are too many time-and-nerves-consuming cooperative missions...mission designers out there should focus at developing quicker missions which don't have to be cooperative at all costs...

I wouldn't say that to a fast attack sailor. :rotfl:

As wargamer stated, the best way to practice your stations is for you to create a simple mission with one ship or sub with course changes at particular intervals. Here's an example, place something on your port/starboard side, then have them come across your bow. If you mess up the TMA...you'll hear the collision alarm. :rotfl:

Edit: Also, experiment with different ships. Since you won't get a sonar signature on a sailboat, use it on one side and a trawler on the other.
