Uh.. What is Decks awash?
I never understoof that.
|
Thats where your running your boat with only the conning tower sticking above the surface. The main deck is submerged. Means a quicker dive in an emergency. You also are a smaller visual target.
|
Cruising in a "surfaced" sub (ie. watch crew on the conning tower) except with the deck directly in front and behind the conning tower underwater. This is a good tactic before the snorkel is invented to reduce diving times.

Decks awashed is a modern day submarine term. It means that you are basicaly traveling with most of the sub submerged, with only the conning tower breaking the water's surface... wich means that the boat's deck is still submerged... wet... awashed... get it? This is considered advantageous because if presents an even smaller silouette of the ship above surface (compared to totally surfaced)
Of course U-boats didn't realy travel much like this since they weren'nt true submarines, but merely torpedoe boats with the specially capability of diving for shorts periods of time (that's why they're called Underwater boats and not submarines... except for the type XXI, that one does qualify as a true submarine... for the most part) As for Silent Hunter III, aparently surfaced is surfaced and dived is dived, no room for in betweens, so modding it so you can travel "decks awashed" won't add much to your stealth... however if will do two things: a) slow your boat down somewhat and b) it will allow you to submerge faster if you order a dive (since your allready half way submerged) That's been my experience with it, but lets whait and see what the true gurus have to say :D |

Hmm. I think the term 'submarine' predates Churchill's tenure in British government. I'm sure neither Holland or Lake refered to their inventions as a U-Boat. U-Boat is just an abbreviation for the German translation of submarine. Unterseebooten....Undersea boats.

The True Submarine was the XXI

Like a true U-boat Ace with comments like a deadly acurate torpedoe: Short, precise, decisive and to the point. Bet you he sinks ships like that too  |
Yes...but then the first true submarine independent of oxygen for it's underwater propulsion plant was the US Navy's Nautilus. ;)
Propulsion plant...sounds odd....must be a perennial at least. |
I think your right Torplexed :)
Does anyone know which was the first submarine to depend more on it's sonar than it's periscope? |
Well it shouldnt be modeled much. I have not heard of U-boots traveling with decks awash in any of the many books and uboat journals and combat reports i have read. WHAT SHOULD be modeled is being able to run your electric motors will surfaced for a quiet escape when surfacing ur boat getting away from detroyers. This would help in the attack of convoys greatly. Along with only running one diesel when traveling great distances! WHY WERENT THESE MODELED! arrg! We want realism!!

U-boat 1916 (said to have been in use from 1913), partial translation of Ger. U-boot, short for Unterseeboot, lit. "undersea boat." I could have sworn it became popular after the fact in ww2 because i remember in a documentary someone asked why he called them submarines and not uboats. because the general public didn't know what the @#$! they were for the most part. |
Hmmm. :hmm: I was trying to cnfigure my boat so just the conning tower is visable, no go, I thought in the manual it said that detection would be determined by how much of the sub was above the surface: i.e. conning tower only or completely surfaced....

Problem is, unless you know how to make a mod in your config files (I think), anytime you're doing anything besides a full-on surface travelling mode, the game considers you submerged and nobody is allowed on deck, and you're running on batteries (and using oxygen and producing CO2). Is this right? It's been my experience. I ran out of fuel once (early on in my career) and was close to home so I submerged to about 8 feet and ran in on batteries.

You can set your "surface depth" in the configuration files for each uboot. Just make the depth a meter or two greater, and you'll always be running with your decks awash (although it prevents you from using your deck gun and AA). Otherwise, you'll have to manually set your depth. |
