Crew Question

Every once in a while, all of a sudden ill get a message saying I dont have any men in my engine compartment. Why did they leave on their own?

And also, I have a bunch of men with exclamation points on them. What is this?

U-Dog 02-10-06 12:49 AM

The exclamation points mean they're exhausted you need to replace them with rested men.

When you go from surface to submerged (or visa versa) your men switch from the Diesel department to the Electric Dept and visa versa. Most men will move automatically, however some will not (not sure if it is an experiance thing).

Basically everytime you go from submerged > Surface or surface > Submerged, i go to crew management to make sure everyone made the switch.

replace the guys that are exhausted (exclamation marks) with crew members that are not. Keep in mind to try and cycle guys whose speciality is in the area that you are placing them, although early on this isn't always possible.

Ok so what engine is used for surface cruising? And also, where do I put the exhausted men?

When on the surface put your men in the Diesel department, submerged = electrical department. There will also be a green bar above those department telling you how effeciant the current group is.

For the life of me i can't think of the name of the area you put your crew. on your first boat, if you start at 1939 then it is between the sonar room and the torpedo room.

I think it's called the crew quarters. Something like that. I'll throw them in there.

The diesel is used on the surface, or when you're snorkeling.

Put the fatigued men in the berthing spaces (crew quarters, whatever). If you have a medic, they will increase the rate at which the men "recharge".

Berthing spaces are just aft of the torpedo room (the forward berths), and forward of the diesel engine room (the aft berths). Even though the forward is larger, it is no more luxurious ( :rotfl: ) and doesn't "recharge" your men any faster than the aft berths.

Trenken, also keep in mind that if you use time compression that crew members will not go fatigue at 64X and higher. However don't get carried away with extremely high compression because it can hurt you when under attack. I generally will only use 1024X when heading to my patrol area or when i'm heading back to my home port.

Also, I had a gunner wounded on the bridge and sent him to the crews quarters where my medic was.Healed him after a while.

It's a weirdness of the game's design. Rated petty officers and regular sailors will move automatically. Unrated or non-machinest petty officers will not. Silly, and I don't know why they did that, but there it is. It's just like Watch Officers not moving to the bridge when you surface.

trenken 02-10-06 01:31 PM

I just found out recently I can mod the crew so that they never usffer fatigue. I know it's not realistic, but I don't play this game to put the crew to bed when they get tired. I hate that aspect of it. I just want to ignore it. So i'll try that out tonight.
