When Hitler invaded Britain

Probably old stuff but I watched it for the 1st (and last) time last night on Discovery channel. Well worth watching imo.

SH3 would have been a way different game.

Operation Sea Lion was a total joke and any way Hitler was itching to turn east against Russia. You look at the German build up 1940 and compare that to the Allies of 1944 just no contest.

Keep in mind, that the British army had lost alot of tanks and other equipment, when they retreated from Dunkirk.

German had 13 divisions ready to storm the island, most of them had combat experience. And when you add the support from Luftwaffe, Britain wouldn´t have lasted for long.

But luckily, the RAF ruined this 'joke'.

That´s the beauty of WHAT IF´s, you´ll never know what would´ve happened.

Operation Sealion can only be described as a blueprint for a German disaster. :ping:

Even Hitler saw that! :yep:

When Hitler invaded Britain

I think Hitlers only realistic chance to invade Britain was in the spring of 1941.
In 1940 the Nazi Army was streched out all over Western Europe, Germany had only improvised amfibious forces and the Royal Air Force nor the Royal Navy were beaten.
If Hitler had concentrated on Britain and would not have been distracted by Operation Barbarossa, he might have had a fair chance with temporary air superiority by the superb FW-190s.

I don't think it has been mentioned yet but Hitler never really expected to have to go to war with Britain prior to his invasion of Poland. That goes some way to explaining the laughable preparations for a Nazi invasion of Britain.

Hitler’s war was against the Jews and Communists, he regarded the British as civilised and did not want war his henchmen pushed the case.

Yes, but I would like to edit that in the sense that Hitler saw Jews as the dangerous orchestrators behind Bolshewism (Communism), Liberalism and Capitalism.
And of course they were useless "Untermenschen" (Subhumans) at the same time!

STEED 02-06-06 02:59 PM

True at the end of the day Hitler was mad and lived for war.

This is the option that is so often overlooked.

History records the failure of Hitler’s improvised and half hearted attempt in 1940. It creates the myth that if Britain could resist invasion in 1940 then invasion would be even less likely to succeed in 1941 or 1942 because she had time to build her shattered forces and improve defences.

Germany had superior resources to call on and a war machine that was yet to reach its peak. Without American resources Britain’s position would in relative terms decline over time. A patient and single minded approach to eliminating Britain was far more likely to succeed in 1941 or even 1942.

As we now know Hitler reasoned that in 1941 Britain was of little threat to Germany’s ascendancy and a lightening strike against Russia was intended to quickly “ kick in the soviet door and overpower the whole rotten edifice ”.
By 1942 with the survival of Russia and the entry of American forces, Hitler had got himself into a war of attrition he could not win. Britain was then on the right side of a resources war and strategically important as a springboard for an Anglo-American intervention into Western Europe.

As you point out on another thread, Abraham, Britain’s political position ironically became weaker as America progressively became the much stronger partner.

For Britain, it’s an heroic story but fundamentally a sad one.

Don't know much about this subject but am wondering how well the German would have been motorized and provided with heavy arms compared to the Brits.

Think it might be very difficu;lt to get thousend of vehicles and heavy arms across the sea. I seem to remember sealowe was mainly aimed at getting people across.

You are right, Drebbel. The German war machine had neither the equipment or training to accomplish this in 1940. Now 1941/42 could well have been a totally different ball game ......

STEED 02-07-06 08:14 AM

People lets get this into perspective in Hitler's own words as set down in Mein kampf. Hitler main goal was Russia he wanted living space, he had to attack Poland due to one reason it was in the way then turn west, which he did and in December 1940, he issued the OST-BOUND-OST order eastern build up. And as I have already pointed out Hitler’s war was on the Jews and Communists, when Hitler attacked Russia in June 41 he had lost the war. As for England we were small fry not worth it how wrong he was.
