Cool real world video of nuke sub!
I found this video clip on one of my local news channel's websites. I thought it was kinda cool.
http://www.king5.com/sharedcontent/V...46655&catId=81 Oh yeah, this is in Seattle, and by the way: GO SEAHAWKS!!!!!!!!! |
Be patient loading the link, it might take a few moments to load, and it comes after the Olympics advertisement, so unfortunately you have to sit through that, but its only a few seconds!
|
What sub is that? It has a rear superstructure casing similar to an Ohio's, but gets wider just after the sail and then narrows-up again. Doesn't look like a standard, 24-tube boomer :hmm:
|
Converted SSBN to a SSGN...........Can now carry 154 tomahawks and a bunch of Seals and their equipment.
|
Confirmed. The video is of USS Ohio (SSGN 726)
http://www.navy.mil/management/photo...-1464F-003.jpg Puget Sound, Wash. (Jan. 29, 2006) – The guided missile submarine USS Ohio (SSGN 726) prepares to stop for a personnel transfer in Puget Sound, Washington. Media were transported to Ohio to see the new capabilities that the submarine now brings to the joint warfighter. Ohio is the first ballistic missile submarine to complete conversion to the new class of guided missile submarines (SSGN). Three other submarines are undergoing the SSGN conversion process including USS Michigan (SSGN 727), Florida (SSGN 727) and Georgia (SSGN 729). :arrgh!: |
 Great vid. I would love to see some close in pics of the topside of the new SSGN to compare it with a standard Ohio class.
|
Nothing has basically changed topside............inside lot of changes.

Intresting example of how form follows function there. Look at this Yankee converted to be a SSGN:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...8_Kurganov.jpg See how the missile compartment gets the same modification but only on a larger scale!?! :hmm: |
The widened section must be to make carrying two DDS's or ASDS's possibe, they will mate with the two forward most missile tubes, which have been converted into huge SEAL lockout chambers.

Great video and pics!

I'm no sub expert, somebody explain please the acronyms y'all are using here. We have: SSBN, SSGN, DDS's and ASDS's. I can sort of guess, but I like to be accurate. I'm too lazy to look it up online. And does this conversion mean that the Ohio and the others to follow will no longer carry nukes, just tomahawks/guided missiles only? There is sub base Bangor near me, I drive by it sometimes when I visit my parents, I'm going to have to see aobut getting on a tour of one of these awesomely cool machines sometime soon, if they do that sort of thing.

All right, I'm a little confused. I thought I had this forum figured out and why postings get placed where they do, but why hasn't my past to replies here moved this post back up to the top of the of page 1? I just had a couple of questions and am worried about this thread getting buried to where nobody will see it and my questions will remain unanswered. This seems to have something to do with when the threads get "Moved"? :damn:  :88)

After I posted these last couple of replies, and then I click "back to forum", I'm magically transported to some other forum's page 1, not where I thought I'd be. This now REALLY confuses me. Man, if anyone out there has followed some of my other postings the last couple of weeks since I first got on this site, they probably think I'm retarded or smokin' crack! :|\ :()1: Please forgive my stupidity on these matters and my computer challengedness, and instead of laughing at me please help my understanding!!!!!!!! :help:

Great shipyard pics by the way! :lurk:
