sonobuoy triangulation
Sonobuoy triangulation question. When plying the FFG, I mark a contact with 3 or more directional sonobuoys, the LOB cross. I can mark this location on the 2D map and when I show truth the contact is pretty close. However, when I mark the cross LOB on the TMA the contact is way off. I put 4 DIFAR sonobuoys in a box patteren, with a sub in the middel. When placing the tma ruler on the cross bearing lines with the current location mark in the middel the contact shows up out side the sonobouy box I created. I don't get it.

being a pilot I'll tell you that you don't need TMA on a sub that's been triangulated. If I get a triangulation, I might as well have an active sonar ping on him :ping: . Just drop the torp and kill him, but that might be more difficult in a Fig than Helo.

if you have tma autocrew on, he wont let you move the ruler.
are you hitting "enter" at the bottom of the top right window in TMA? When you cross up those lob's, right click on the nav map and use "add manual solution". Classify the target and make it hostile so you can engage it for sure. Trying to do TMA after this point is only going to give course, and speed(because you already know the range and bearing). And you don't have any demon with a buoy. You're really not supposed use TMA for figure speed of a sub, thats what demon is for (demon can do it instantly, instead of having to wait 2 minutes...) Also, the buoy range is so limited compared to a sub, that by the time you did do TMA the target could be out of range. That sub isn't going anywhere soon. Your torp will starting homing around 1.5-2 miles so drop a "circle" torp. if you want to anyways, you gotta pick the added manual solution in the tma with the other two LOB's visible, the move the manual solution. |
Generally speaking when you do triangulation TMA is not necessary because you already know exactly where the sub is, so you can just go kill him. :arrgh!:

technically, you can do a sort of TMA with bouies, radar and even MAD/SAD, if you're willing to wait before killing him.
For Bouies: take a triangulated sub, and put a manual solution in the triangle, then wait a little while and do another triangulation and take the time and distance and find speed (I think it's speed X time = distance). For radar: This is easy. if you mark a contact with the radar then wait a couple of minutes and hit mark on them again. I've seen it give me a speed and course for the contact when I click on it on the map. MAD/SAD I'll have to test if it gives you a course and speed but if you MAD a guy twice, you can tell where he was and where he's going. in anti-submarine warfare, it's not really important to do TMA when in a fig, and you can't while in a helo or P-3 because if we know where you are, we know where to shoot our torpedoes. I would say that TMA is only really important for subs so that they know the course and speed of all the surface contacts, especially that of the frigates. so if you're in a fig, just launch the helo, get a triangulation and don't worry about TMA. |
Some experienced FFG players such as OKO claim to only use the FFG TMA station (he plays manual only) as a station to merge and drop contacts to make the Nav Map situational awareness easier to handle.
