Hmm, I guess the retail version is the closest, though I had it imported directly from Strategy First's online sales site as I couldn't find it locally here in the UK. So, retail, but not from a retailer. ;)

What's the difference between Battlefront and retail?

The retail is already patched to the 1.02 version whereas the battlefront version is the 1.0 .
Other than that, the battlefront version was published in february 2005 (with the printed manual in the deluxe version), whereas the retail version was published by strategy first in december 2005.

I hope that they will patch the battlefront version to 1.02 very soon!

The most current version of DW is actually 1.03b, which is a Beta for the 1.03 patch which should be released the same day DW goes up on steam, which is February 7th.

I recommend using either 1.01 or 1.03b. If you are new to the game or have not played it to the point where you know it well, and you have the Battlefront version, I'd say stick with 1.01 until the official 1.03 comes out.

If you are a retail customer running 1.02, I'd definately patch to 1.03b because 1.03b fixes problems in 1.02 without introducing any new ones, its just not a full version of the patch because there are some other issues that need to be resolved with it, and as far as I know have been dealt with outside of the Steam intergration.

As a newbie to subsim.com, I want to extend my appreciations to the webmasters for running this wonderful site. I've been reading it on a daily basis for a couple weeks. However, today is the first day I've actually registered in the forum so I can participate.

I am generally a flight simulation junkie, which is what really drew me to Dangerous Waters since there is a controllable P-3. I do love sailing around in the Frigate, though... :lol:

I first heard about Dangerous Waters a few months ago in an official US Navy magazine - I think it was "Approach." It caught my eye, so I asked a civillian tech about it who is extremely into computer games. He advised me against getting it because of the realism and great level of detail. But, those are things that attract me. Since I am a flight simulator junkie (generally civillian airliners) I am very thorough in my simulations, even with the shortest of flights - I actually file a flight plan of sorts and follow real-world procedure when possible. After thinking about it for a long time and reading other's opinions on this web site, I finally decided to get it. I was blown away by the sim and wish I hadn't waited! BTW, I also highly enjoyed the other Janes titles "Fleet Command" and "F/A-18" to a great extent.

Getting back to the original subject of this thread, I was surprised to see the boxed version of Dangerous Waters in GameStop in the Pearlridge Mall near Honolulu, Hawaii. That is what prompted me to investigate the title further since I knew it was originally available only by download. Two weeks later, I was happy to see it still on the shelves waiting for me. The clerk didn't know anything about it, but I gave him a brief review based on what I had researched.

My suggestion to the distributers is to also sell the game at US Navy installation stores known as "The Navy Exchange" or NEX. I can tell you from personal experience, there is a huge market for the simulation that does not even know it exists unless it gets put on the shelves where my fellow sailors shop.

Thanks for making such a great software product! My hope is that you continue to improve and expand it.

The idea of Navy Exchange is a good one for our military. However, if I remember right, the exchange was a place that we could go to and pay less money for items. So, SCS would loose money if that was batted around.

That may be true with everyday items like toothpaste, but in the case of software, I am sure the price is the same. The one major advantage of the NEX I experience is that it is tax free for service members.
