Career mode - Type VIIC "upgrade"?
 

All these months in, it's the first time I've faced this dilemma (I previously stopped playing for a bit, then managed to wipe my career when I returned....).

So - do you bother? Six patrols in and I'm offered the "upgrade", but looking at the game manual I can't see any actual benefit. The VIIC is slower than the VIIB both above and below water, it dives more slowly and has a shorter underwater range.

But that's what the book says. What about those who've sailed her? are there any practical benefits? 'Cos for the moment I'm inclined to save my reknown (I also understand I'd have to spend even more reknown re-equipping the new boat with upgrades I've already got fitted on the VIIB).

ps - this isn't one of those things where I've got to get this upgrade in order to later get the IXs and XXI, is it?

I believe the 'C' moves as fast as the 'B' when you get the engine upgrade.
The only real advantage I can see is that the 'C' will be able to get additional (and nicer looking) conning tower upgrades - not that you should be playing with the planes anyway :know:

if you want to make a 'u-flak' like boat, go for the VII/C if you want a nice sub basically the same stay with the B

Or if you want to travel to far away places warm sunshine and tropical breezes... save your renoun for a XIB. You'll carry more torpedos and be able to sink more shipping. It's very nice for those large convoys you come across and want to wreek havoc on. The upgrade is in the eye of the beholder. ;)

But putting the far away places aside, with SHIII Commander 2.3 installed you can select the partol area you want. Even the Uboat number you wish to have, along with other changes.

The crew & captain, up graded from VIIB to a IX two patrols later went back to a VIIC. We now have 42 patrols under our belt.It's late 1943 Its getting tough to stay alive. :hulk:

Hmmmm, what boat do I need, and where do I need to start from in order to hit the east coast of the U.S.? One way trips don't do much for "reknown", I don't think... :nope:

I have it in my head that a VIIC will go deeper, and cope better with sustained depth charges than a VIIB.

Speed is great but only really when crash diving.

Whether you are doing 2, 3 or 4 knots submerged doesn't really matter if the escorts are charging about doing 25; but using the third dimension of the sea does. Because the ability to go deeper means that the depth charge must take longer to reach us, and therefore give us more time to scoot away from the splash, but also, the deeper it has to be set for, the less, by the increased water pressure surrounding it, will be the explosive impact.

Neither is any substitute for shrewd boat handling, of course, and whatever type of boat we take out, it is in that we must place our trust.

-With VIIC, the dive time is lesser, only with a few seconds, but it could be live saving in air-dominancy times.

-More conning tower upgrades (maybe also more battery upgrades?)

There were 20x more VIIC build than VIIB, so using VIIC in 1940+ is more close to reality experience.

Some of the U-Boat skippers stayed with the VII class because of it's faster dive time. :up:
