Sonar range large convoy???

If you have a large Convoy about 80 ships about 50 miles away
should you beable to hear them? I was reading ina book that you could
hear a large convoy 60 ships or great at 70 miles away. Is there away that you can increase the range of the sonar? :oops:

The game does over model how well and consistant the sonar was. The Atlantic ocean was/is a very noisy place.
