Help with sonar

It says in the SHIII wiki that you should be able to man the sonar-position and listen to detect ships, but I cant seem to man it. All I can do is to talk to the sonarman, and he is not to much use..

Any help would be apriciated!

That's what I use to man the listening station - plus turn up ambient sound.
