Dive and Towed Array deployments and retrieval Rates
Posted this over at the CADC here
The following is a short excerpt of the test results from a test made by Ron Banks a.k.a SubSailor. The full document is attached to this post. 688I Array deployment
- PD to 1254 starting at 5kts 12.15 minutes -- speed increased to 10kts at 200 feet -- and increased to 20kts at 500ft. 12.15 minutes - 1254ft to PD (see above for automatic speed increases) 4.55 minutes. Akula Array deployment - Deployed and retrieved Towed Array (701 meters) 4.35 minutes. Depth changes - PD to 442 meters -- speed changes at 45 meters 10kts -- 40 meters 20kts, time 11 minutes. - 442 to PD 3.44 minutes (same auto speed change) 3.44 minutes. Seawolf Array deployment
- PD to 1761 feet starting at 5kts with changes in speed -- at 130ft, 10kts and at -- 230ft, 20kts. Time 9.50 minutes. - 1761 to PD (same auto speed change) 4 minutes. Kilo Depth changes - PD to 254 meters 4kts 9.5 minutes. - 254 to PD 4.0 minutes. |
This is with the beta patch right?

I think when I posted some figures from testing a long time ago it was LuftWolf who said effectively: "This is old hat'..... To that I would add 'This is BETA !!' Right Angle :up: So any premature posting up of performance figures should carry a suitable bold HEALTH WARNING. :yep: Well I am a country-boy trusting that SAS will act to change this quickly/ :hmm: :yep: ................ ................and an eternal optimist. ;). But heck SubSailor - some of those TA figures were a shock - thanks.:rock: :cool: :yep: |
My purpose was to inform.
Bellman;
I setup and performed this test to try help the people who have a heck of a lot more knowledge and ability with these simulations than I will ever have to save them time. I know this is a beta and we are trying to find out how it is working. I do not know the first thing about doing the work on the sims that is done, I am just beginning to develop some missions that I am sarting to believe I would share with others. If I had a clue on how to speed up the dive rate or make the TA deploy faster I would. I am in awe of Oneshot Mr Nicholas, and well everyone who have rebuilt SC and are working on DW, all I can offer is experience and the perspective of one who loves subs and these sims. I know boats and the equipment and how they operate, but developing a sim, I don't have a glimmer of how it is done. Hell ask Oneshot I don't even kow how to post files on these sites. He was kind enough to do it for me. For most of my life, 24 years in the Navy and 14 years as a teacher in Idaho, I always tried to make things better, I blieve in helping where I can, I am confident that this problem will be fixed, and by me contributing the only thing I have time and experience to use as a base then I gladly do it. I know we have posted about the dive rate and the towed array, all I did was give it some real figures that the real back bone of these sims, all of you, could use to fix it. In return I will get to play a fist class simualtion that you will develop. Most respectfully, Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret) |
Geezzz Ron...didn't have to write a book.. :o :lol: ;)
Just kidding! You did an awesome job Ron and glad you figured out how to set up the statistics for everyone to view! :up: |
Sonar
I can't take credit for setting it up, Oneshot was kind enough to do it for me. I never figured out how to add a file to the forums. It was his efforts that got it on, thank him.

I'm just wondering, why does it take longer to deploy the Starboard Towed Array?
|
Best I can figure is-
I believe the difference is in the length. When LWAMI devloped the mod he put the thin lines on the Stbd side, he explains the reasoning for that, so if my figures still hold the Stbd Arrays are-688i TB 23 2950 feet, Seawolf TB 29 3300 feet. Both Boats have the Fat line TB 16 now on the port side and it was 2600 feet. The Akulas are now listed at 701 meters, and in SC it was 330 or about 1000 feet. That is all I have to go on regarding the Akula. As far as I know the reel motor is still constant speed. The Arrays on the 688i and Seawolf maybe longer is DW, maybe Jamie could clarify that. In SC the ployment speeds are Pelamida 2.5 miutes, 16 2.5 mintues, 23 3 mintues and the 29 is 3.5 minutes.
Not much of answer but about the only one I came up with, Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret) |
The deployment speeds of things are in the database and relate to how much of a percentage of the cable is going to deploy at the same time, I think it should be fairly straightforward to change, but TA deploy speed is in fact relative to how fast Ownship is moving as you try to deploy the array.
So that might be the only snag. I hope 1.03 comes out today so I can find out. :up: :know: |
A question
Luftwolf;
I believe you have something here, I know that if you were at all stop or maybe one knot TA would not deploy in SC, I have never tried it in DW. But It makes sense that speed would help drag the wire out. Do you think speed would act againist retrieveing the wire faster? Would it retrieve faster at 4 knots than at 10 Knots? I don't know, but reading your post I got to thinkng about it. Also do you know if they made the US Towed Arrays longer in DW? That would certainly increase retrieval and deployment time. I like you mod, Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret) |
Thank you Ron. :)
And thanks for doing this work, it should definatlely help us. BTW, at what speed did you test these deployment times? |
Speed
LW;
Always at 5kts, wasn't thinking. Do you want me to go back and try say at 10 kts? I have my test mission still loaded, so it is not a problem. Any thing I can do to help, Ron |
If you could do that it would be good to know! Try 15kts instead of 10.
Thank you! :D |
I will
LW;
Before I received your last I tried 688i at 10 knots and WOW STBD Deploy 4.57 vice 10 at 5kts Retrieve 4.57 /10.48 at 5kts Port 4.57 at 10/6.10 at 5 4.57 at 10/6 at 5kts. A heck of a lot faster but I cannot explain the consistent 4.57 no mater what. I was a 100 feet 10kts and did not manuver or anything else. I will get the other data at 15 for 688i Seawolf and Akula. Would you advice trying the Kilo at that speed, Idon't know much about it. Peplexed in Idaho, Ron |
