bug with smoke

Hi guys,

I have heard of an nvidia spray issue but not a smoke issue. It seems on comparision to my desktop ATI 9800 pro ..my geforce 6800 go seems to render smoke more as bubbles or blobs of smoke and also in lesser volume compared to the mist of smoke on the 9800 pro.

Is there any fix for this. any help will be appreciated.

PS::: I did use search function but did not find any help.

I had to use the Improved Smoke Mod to get realistic looking smoke with my Nvidia 6600GT card.

What driver version are you using with your 6800pro?

This is a driver issue that arose after the 71.89 drivers...if you update to the newest drivers for Nvidia cards it should take care of the problem.

Same here; my 6600 renders smoke less accurately than my old Radeon card. I think I'll try the latest drivers, as you said...

The problem is I cannot update to nvidia's drivers as they do not support the laptop go versions in their drivers. :(

I guess I'll see if dell has any new updates

I just got a second hand card off a friend of mine. The performance boost is great, but now the smoke in SH3 is pale white. Really odd.

Tried lots of the options in the display settings. Weirdly, it occasionally starts off normal and black, then the hard disk runs, the game pauses and it goes white irreversably.

Don't know what it is causing it. Will one of the smoke mods fix it?

I read elsewhere it is a driver issue, someone posted a fix involving dxtweaker but I can't find it now...

Anyway game still looks pretty, just ships dont appear to have smoke at distance.

ALT-TAB out of the game then back in and the smoke will be black again, until you get the sun in your scope or uzo again.

Ok, I think I have a fix now.

I downloaded Net Framework (cause directX tweaker requires it) and then ran directX tweaker. Made a new project, linked it to the SH3.exe, selected Force Shader FP and started the game using the start button in dxtweaker and it was fine. Nice black smoke again.

I understand TT is looking at modding the smoke some more, so looking forward to that too now...

not fixed, sometimes it works sometimes not!

Witchking, that picture of your sub heading to what looks like a sub base, is that in the game? if so what port is it.

CCIP 12-06-05 02:13 PM

No, that's from an old preview of SHIII, back from the time when they didn't even plan a dynamic campaign, or modelling of coastlines and ports (that's why you would have had little video sequences to show your sub returning to port instead).

Looks fancy, but it'd only be a cut scene :hmm:

Paajtor 12-06-05 02:48 PM

Yes, I've seen it before...but I thought it was from PTBoats-KnightsOfTheSea. :hmm:

Jace11 02-03-06 03:58 PM

Hmm, I have the smoke bug since I got a GF5950U from a friend and i havent really played Sh3 cause of it since.... shame cause I used to play this game ALOT... and mod bits too...

But today I booted it up and its fine, all smoke is dark... even when I look straight at the sun then back it ships...

Weird...

I'm trying to think what I have done recently and whether I can reproduce it.

Will get back to you guys if I make progress...

You mean the PT Boat sim that never is, never was and never will be.

Jace11 if you find out how you fixed I would be very interested in knowing how it is done.
