Help !!!!! I'm running out of diesel fuel !!!!!

So as I understand SH3, and please correct me if I'm missing something, the thing to do is to keep your sub out in the Atlantic until your are completely out of fuel and completely out of battery. Then, since there is no way to refuel, simply surface and click on the Return to Base icon. Then all would be the same as if you actually took the time to sail back to Kiel.

Daft but yes, comes in handy sometimes if not realistic.
There is the "milk cow" mod so you can refuel before going back to base but you have to come out of the game and restart on the next mission which is daft too??? For example if you are on patrol one and decide to stop at one of these refuel points it starts you off again at patrol 2, so you can't continue patrol one anyway, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but there you go, glitch in the game apparently?. Six and two threes which you use really, they have the same outcome.

You don't get as much renown for doing this. I believe you have to be within 30 km of base before you can end the mission and get the bonus for making it all the way back.

But maybe you have no choice if you're out of gas, unless you've got oars on board?

So the difference is only in the amount of Renown you are awarded?

By the way, what good is renown? I haven't found a good answer to that question yet. I thought it was supposed to be spent on good stuff (as in the Thief series). But I also see where people say don't spend any of it. What gives?

Is there any way to edit fuel leves while on patrol? Cheating a little but just curious.

Yes, if you actually navigate back to your base (or at least close to it) and then end your mission, you will get 100 extra renown. Some people never go all the way back, because it can take a long time, but I personally like to go back. It makes the game a little more realistic.

For the whole story on renown, check this out.

It's used for all kinds of things. The most useful things are switching to a new u-boat or upgrading your current u-boat, and both are done while in between patrols at the desk labeled "U-Boat". If you start in 1939, there's not much to upgrade at first, but as the war progresses, all kinds of new stuff will be available for you to spend your renown on.

You can also use it to get better, more experienced crew at the barracks, which is also in between missions. It's the file cabinet in the office.

What do you mean ?
Travelling at medium speed ~10 knots you get about the same ranges as listed at www.uboat.net. But of course, when doing flank speed, your fuel efficiency (and range) will be much, much lower.

CptGrayWolf 11-28-05 07:49 AM

That`s why you guys gotta travel everywhere at 1/3 speed!
Ordering only full speed and flank speed during an engagement.
I know its slow, but you get the best range!

Krupp 11-28-05 08:46 AM

U-boat.net gives a range of 8700 nautical miles with 10 knots for type VIIb I'm currently commanding. That's about 16100 Km's and the game gives me a range of about 16500 Km's when going 1/3 (appr. 10 knots). That is hardly "WAAAAYYY WRONG" :)

It's 35 - 40 days pure cruising + all other delays with submerged, waiting for better weather etc. patrols can last up to six weeks. But I keep 8 weeks (at least that's what Heinz Schäffer wrote in his book U-977) as maximum "normal" limit because I like to think that there ain't much to eat for the crew :-?

Agreed

EDIT: only time I'm using maximum optimal speed is when I'm racing back to home base after using all eels and don't have to worry about diesel consumption any longer...

And planning for fuel usage adds a new consideration to merchant chases - do you try to catch that ship, going for a full day at flank speed away into Atlantic, if you know that you'll still need fuel to go back home ?

Wijbrandus 11-28-05 09:59 AM

Fuel, fuel, fuel...

I passed up several choice targets this weekend because I simply didn't want to burn the gas to catch them.

I use 1/3rd for all travel. I only use full or flank when I'm trying to dodge a depth charge or I'm already in a decent position for a kill and want to close the range.

I learned early on that a Type II cannot engage in an end-run without drastically using up the fuel, but it doesn't matter so much since they only carry five fish. The Type VIIs have a nice amount of fish, and I simply prefer to lie in wait for nice targets to come to me rather than chase down something from a bad position.

Though if I'm lucky, and the weather is good and the seas calm, my deck gun will be used for chasing shots. Comes in handy, that.
