Coloured Triangle Markers

Hi people,

In the periscope and also in the UZO view you get a trianlge when the cursor hovers over the ship. These are often different colours:

Yellow
Green
Red

Is there a reason (there must be) why there are different colours?

First things first, the triangles are "on" because you are playing on automatic targetting mode. Those triangles are "off" if you play full manual targetting. They will only appear if you lock the deckgun or AA gun to the target.

Basically, the triangle colors represent the effectiveness of the torpedo shot if you are to fire at that precise moment. It takes into account range to target, gyro angle, and AOB.

Red means bad chance of successful attack.
Yellow means ok chance of successful attack.
Green means good chance of successful attack.

But with that being said, I think the triangles are nonsensical B.S.. Even if I played on auto (which I don't), I woundn't listen to those things. Use your own instincts and fire whenever you feel like you can hit the target. "Use the force, Andrea-Jayne." Hahaha. :rotfl:

Cheers!
Marhkimov.

Thank you for that perfect explaination. Maybe one day I will graduate to being "triangle - less"!

You should, it's pretty fun. At first when you do all the reading it seems like it's going to hurt your head, but really it doesn't. The way I do it there is only one bit of math, a simple division, and the rest is just eyeballing it. It's just as accurate too.

Marhkimov 11-21-05 05:09 PM

Yep, I started out using the full manual targeting. I never liked the idea of automatic targeting. Real captains did not have the luxury of using such a tool, so that made the decision easy for me. Full manual all the way; live or die by my own wits.

Don't get me wrong, though. That doesn't mean that I was any good at it. No no no. It was the exact opposite. At first, it was a world of frustration. Seriously, in the Naval Academy I could not hit ships moving at 2 knots. I was THAT bad.

But I stuck with it, knowing that it would probably get easier, sooner rather than later.

That was months ago. Since then I've learned all the angle calculation techniques and such. Sometimes it gets tedious, but after a while of that, it becomes fun. Once you can rely on your captain's intuition is when the real excitement begins.

Though I know all of the calculations, the only thing I do now is the 3:15 rule. It's so that I can measure the target speed. For me, I just guess the AOB and range, and so far I've been pretty good with that. I hardly ever miss-fire a torpedo... If I do, it's because I should be sleeping rather than playing SH3...

Have you ever tried an easier way of calculating speed? This is the way I do it, it takes 20-30 seconds and is plenty accurate. ID the ship, and note its length. Put the crosshair just ahead of the ship and leave it. Start the stopwatch as soon as the bow crosses the crosshair, and stop it again as the stern passes it. The ship has traveled its entire length in that amount of time. Divide length by time, and you get meters per second. Divide that by .514, and you have knots! Piece of cake, and as long as the target's AOB is 30-50 or more, it's extremely accurate.

It would work if we are sitting still in the water. But if we're moving, it won't take u-boat speed into account, right?

Or does it even matter if we're moving or not?

Trav_R 11-21-05 08:58 PM

Using that method you have to be at all stop, but I do all my launches from all stop anyway. Only takes a second to stop, get the speed, and then get moving again if you still need to move. If you're asking if the TDC takes your speed into account, man I wouldn't know, I seem to hit things okay when I am still moving, so it must not be too big a deal.

Marhkimov 11-21-05 09:04 PM

Oh ok, i get it... It works only from a stop.

And yes, TDC takes u-boat speed into account.

BTW, nice avatar. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

How did I get stuck with this horrible thing??? :o I thought the medic was bad, and then this? I've never even seen this thing before!

Good thing it's gone...

Yeah that was the one :nope:

Talking about triangles and stuff, does anyone know how to get rid of the little green gun icon beneath an aircraft that is being targeted by your gunners? Ruins my nice little screenshots of aircraft going down in flames through my binoculars :D

Marhkimov 11-22-05 02:26 AM

It's in one of the texture files, but it's pretty useful if you ask me... but I can understand if you wanna get rid of it for screenshots.
