New Heavyweight Torpedo for US, Australia

I just read this PR release from the Austrailian Minister of Defence concerning upgrades to their subs, as well as joining the US in developing the Heavyweight Torpedo System. This is the first I've heard of this program. All I can say is that it's about time a sucessor was found for the Mk. 48. It is getting abit long in tooth. Anyone else have info about this new torpedo?

Hmmm, I wonder if it'll be a wire-guided Skhval-esque torp.
I agree though, the Mk 48 could do with a successor by now, as capable as it is, it needs to begin to compete with such designs as the Skhval which although at the moment ain't wireguided....you can bet your bottom dollar that the next make of Skhval to come rumbling out of Murmansk will be.

Interesting news. I'm sure the US has a revolutionary surprise in the pipeline. At least I hope so as the Mk48 is getting a bit long in the tooth even with the improvements over the years. I would choose the British Spearfish over the Mk48 ADCAP If I had to.

One thing i hate about my country.

We got no subs :nope:

And our navy consist of 5 frigates

AND we sold our Airforce!

Therefore we got 5000 troops no airforce, 5 frigates and no subs

Time to build that bunker in my backyard

Don't worry the evil old UsofA would back y'all up if necessary.

It's the Mark 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System (CBASS)

"A followon version of the Mark 48 Mod 6 guidance and control hardware, called the Advanced Common Torpedo Guidance and Control Box (ACOT-GCB), will be introduced in FY05 in order to replace obsolete components. ACOT-GCB parts will be incorporated into the next-generation torpedo, the Mark 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System (CBASS), planned to start testing in FY05. The CBASS torpedo is being developed as part of a cooperative program between the United States and Australia. Several software builds are currently under oversight. Block III upgrade is the final tactical software upgrade to the Mark 48 Mod 5. Block IV extends Block III capabilities and applies them to the Mark 48 Mod 6 weapon. The more sophisticated CBASS software follows the Block IV. In lieu of future Block upgrades, the program plans to employ a series of advanced processor builds (APBs) to both the Mod 6 and CBASS weapons as a more flexible means of introducing software changes."

Great. Nice link Neal.

Can anyone explain to me what roughly CBASS translates into in terms of capabilty? What are the improvements over existing technology? In other wrods is there any more info to it's projected capabilities that aren't classified?

I doubt that very much. We are nuclear free zone, meaning no nuke ships are allowed in our ports or within our limit zone.

Plus we also told one of your high command to go home.

Plus we dont support your war on terroism

And all these discisions were put forward by our female leader.

Would the good old USofA want to help us?

:hmm:

Dont blame ya if you dont.

Basically, CBASS will give Mk48 better capability against countermeasures and better shallow-water performance.

I have to say that the name of this project is misleading. They should just call it what it is, a MK 48 update. In my opinion this whole thing is dissapointing, it's nice to impove the ADVCAP's "brain' but what the navy really could use is a whole new torpedo with speed, manuverability and range that puts it head and shoulders above the most advanced torpedo currently in service. After all, since they stripped the US subs of Harpoons and SUBROC, all they've got to fight sub and surface threats are torpedo's, shouldn't they be the best?

micky1up 11-17-05 09:14 PM

sorry boys it still aint gonna be enough to beat Spearfish best torpedo in the world you know!

Then your going to feel much worse when i tell you that New Zealand only have 2 Frigates. And they are baseline ANZAC's without all the kit the RAN has put on them.

Effectively the RNZN Frigates are just oversized and overpriced corvettes.
2 Frigates, not nearly enough.
Realistically though even if NZ wanted to it would be decades before they would have the capability to have subs. NZ doesnt have the know how, resources, need, doctrine, or want for submariners. Getting a a half decent surface force and being able to police your waters is top priority, unfortunatly for you, Clarke has neglected that.

Correct. So its down to 2 frigates? Im not surprised.

National party if were in govenment were willing to spend 3 billion every 4 yrs on the forces until we were up to standard with at least australia. We would of brought the 22 Aircraft the US offered us & The 8 helicopters There was discussions of buying the same subs Australia use.

Then Helen Clark becomes Prime minister and wipes all requests. Sells our airforce and focus only on New Zealand as being peace keeper forces. Not long ago we had a plane flying around Auckland city the pilot wanted to crash into the Sky tower. We had NO planes to shoot him down :rotfl: So the police just had to wait till he ran out of petrol :rotfl: :rotfl: . Turned out the pilot was just a nutter that ran amok after his girfriend left him. But what would happen if it was a terriost threat. We would be helpless if it was a 9/11 situation.

Just madness

Oh and we dont have the know how? Money talks
