A question on career lengths

Okay, so I've pretty much abandoned the career aspect of the campaigns. Basically I've decided to keep track of the crew and U-boat. The Captain is secondary. Hell, historically they came and went pretty quickly (16 patrols maximum).

So my question for all you U-boat know-it-alls out there :) :

Did the crew have the same career length?

After a maximum of 16 mission (as an example) where they sent to other duties? I know historically the longer you stayed on these U-boats the more likely it is you where going to die so I think most of the crews in the later years where green. But it's early in the war and I'm having a string of luck. My first Captain went 9 patrols and he is being replaced (by a roll of the dice). I'll probably give the command to the senior officer of the U-boat replacing his open spot with an officer from the barracks.

I understand (from another thread) when it's time for the Captain to "upgrade" to a new U-boat type I'll lose all of my crew and get a new one (I'll transfer a few over to the new boat) but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

If you play historical career lengths try it. It's kind of neat. Using the SH3 Commander option of random transfers you get a diverse crew. I'm doing it from 1939 to the end of the war keeping track of the tonnage for each captain as I go.

Thanks for any info you can throw my way!

Actually you get to keep your crew in the game. Personally, I go to the barracks dismiss a number of the sailors and get green ones (including a most of the non-coms)I use SH3 Commander to change a few names to keep some verterans on board and give a few qualifications to some of the non-coms and maybe an officer.

Don't worry, You and Ulrich can live a happy life together under the waves.

Apparently the Kriegsmarine has a "don't ask don't tell policy" and to think I thought Slick Willy came up with that all by himself. :hmm:
