Mediterranean Late '41 / Early '42
Looking for new areas to "visit" in my Type VIIC during this campaign game I'm in.
Any point in trying to get past Gibralter? Whats the huting like during this time period - or is it a case of you mainly being "the hunted"? |
Strait of Gibraltar seems to be flooding with battleships. The straight is a nice place to wait for them, though tad risky. :D Valletta is a crappy place to visit, so I think you should head for Port Said and Alexandria. I think the Med's fun, but not very spacy.

How the hell do you get through ? every time I try at night I have to run submerged, soo as I surface to replenish O2 recharge batteries, only get a half hour or so and DD's are in the area, am I getting picked up on radar ?

Only got attacked by 3 depth charges. :) |
I went through in late '43 submerged of course, but can't remember how long it took. Lots of escorts picked up on sonar, but overall was pretty easy. Did most of the ports there, Port Said being both worst and best. Said is so freakin shallow that if you get detected, you'll have no where to run, but once inside the harbour there are no escorts over near the docks and they don't go there even if you sink anything so kills are easy. Just lots of escorts near the entrance, which can make it fun.

I got a Japanese keyboard and getting a few mods installed was a pain, so I just vanilla SH3.

I have never had a problem going in or out. What I do is to run on the surface at standard until I make a sighting, dive deep go silent and run the rest deep until I am clear. This way I save all possible energy.
Rarely do I make it to the entrance of the straits but close enough to do the rest of the passage easy. If I get detected too early I go west and patrol and come back for another try and always with enough battery to go well past Gibraltar. Wulfmann |
Use Rub and sail around Malta and Pantelleria. :know:
